Episode 20 recap: Wang Jianmin Suspected of Killing Han Li

In Episode 20, Er Jin's daughter, Jin Fei, encounters Lin Jiang outside. With her father in prison, Lin Jiang uses this as an opportunity to humiliate her and forces her to have dinner with him. Jin Fei resolutely refuses, which angers Lin Jiang. Fortunately, Jiang Xiao Hai arrives just in time to drive Lin Jiang away. However, Jin Fei feels frustrated that both Qin Yi and her father have met with tragic fates, while Jiang Xiao Hai seems unaffected. She angrily tells him to stop pretending to be kind.

The special investigation team works late into the night to look into the drug situation. Unfortunately, they only find small retail distributors, which doesn’t lead them to the source. Gu Yi Ran suggests a change in strategy, proposing they trace the meth back to its chemical origins. Since the raw materials are often counterfeit, it might be more effective to focus on pharmaceutical and chemical companies. Even if they can’t check every factory, they might uncover some clues in the accounting records.

Zheng Bei agrees with Gu Yi Ran’s suggestion and immediately organizes the team to split up and take action. That evening, Zheng Bei, Gu Yi Ran, and Zhao Xiao Guang gather in a room to watch crime-solving films for inspiration. Zheng Nan deliberately sits close to Zhao Xiao Guang, but he remains oblivious to her intentions, leaving her feeling quite frustrated.

A friend advises Zheng Nan not to confess directly but to drop hints to make Zhao Xiao Guang understand her feelings. Following this advice, Zheng Nan takes Zhao Xiao Guang to a rental store to pick out new films. She mentions her past admiration for the character Zhi Zun Bao from "A Chinese Odyssey," her liking for Qiao Feng from "The Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils," and more recently, her affection for minor characters—all subtle hints about her feelings for him.

Unbeknownst to her, Zhao Xiao Guang misinterprets this as her suggesting that she could fall for anyone but him. Although Zheng Nan has a cheerful personality, she feels too shy to express her feelings to someone she previously turned down, so she tries to create opportunities for them to be alone, but each attempt ends in failure.

Later, Zheng Bei brings a chicken carcass and some dumplings made by his mother to Jiang Xiao Hai, along with a new electric fan. Jiang Xiao Hai feels that Zheng Bei doesn’t need to go through all this, as he owes him nothing. However, Zheng Bei insists that as Jiang Xiao Hai's older brother, he should take care of him.

Meanwhile, Gu Yi Ran reviews the accounting data and notices a pharmaceutical company named "Yunhui." This jogs his memory about Jiang Xiao Hai's brother-in-law working at that very company.

Meanwhile, Jiang Ying Zi personally brings food and cold medicine to Wang Jianmin, only to find that the financial secretary, Han Li, has come over with a meal and is deliberately speaking ambiguously with Wang Jianmin.

Despite Wang Jianmin’s cold demeanor and refusal to engage, Han Li remains oblivious and makes sarcastic comments toward Jiang Ying Zi. Jiang Ying Zi responds with a smile, though there’s something strange about her expression. A few days later, Han Li's body is discovered by some fishing enthusiasts, and the major case team next door takes over the investigation.

Zheng Bei happens to pass by and sees a photo of the victim, feeling a sense of familiarity. Upon reviewing the information, he recognizes Han Li as the accountant from Yunhui Pharmaceutical, and her supervisor is Wang Jianmin, Jiang Xiao Hai's brother-in-law. Consequently, Zheng Bei applies to merge the investigations.

The special investigation team then conducts interviews and gathers evidence. Zheng Bei finds some scratches on a stone and decides to take a rubbing for analysis, suspecting that the marks may have been caused by a military shovel. The roughness of the marks suggests it has been in use for a long time, leading to wear.

Zheng Bei and Gu Yi Ran go to question Wang Jianmin and notice severe burn marks on his arm, which oddly align with the bite marks on Han Li's body. When questioned, Wang Jianmin admits that he knew Han Li had feelings for him but had been pretending not to notice to avoid complicating their professional relationship.

Meanwhile, Zhang Xue Yao and others are interviewing witnesses and discover bloodstains in a hidden corner. Tests confirm that the blood is indeed Han Li's. Everyone begins to suspect that Wang Jianmin is likely the murderer. Gu Yi Ran recalls that on the day of the incident, Han Li had copied an account book, initially thought to be part of her routine work, but now they suspect it may be related to the case, leading them to believe Wang Jianmin killed her to destroy evidence.
