Episode 4 recap: Jiang Xiao Hai Becomes a Suspect in a Murder Case

In Episode 4, early in the morning, Gu Yi Ran is awakened by Zheng Bei’s murmurs in a dream, with the name “Le Le” echoing in the morning light. He arrives early at the task force, gets organized, and even sets up a large blackboard to prepare thoroughly. When Zhang Xue Yao and the others see this, they grow more appreciative of Gu Yi Ran and feel no resentment.

The task force has made new progress, tracking the suspect’s movements in Halan City. This individual boarded a vehicle on the 31st and arrived in Halan on the 2nd, possibly harming the Song brothers, Song Wen and Song Wu, over a disagreement about money. While reviewing the glass factory records, Zheng Bei discovers a major oversight: the person who reported the incident, Jiang Xiao Hai, was actually off duty that night; it was Song Wu who was on shift.

This revelation suggests the Song brothers were up to something suspicious that day, trying to make a clandestine deal in Xiaobailou. Additionally, Zheng Bei learns that Jiang Xiao Hai has a criminal record from the 1990s in the south for fighting, which raises further suspicions about him.

On Ding Guo Zhu's side, shoe print analysis indicates a possible fourth person at the scene. Consequently, the task force reexamines Jiang Xiao Hai and lists him as a suspect. Jiang Xiao Hai insists he is innocent, claiming he tried to save Song Wen but couldn’t catch him in time.

Zhang Xue Yao and Ding Guo Zhu find a witness who confirms that Jiang Xiao Hai indeed tried to help Song Wen but failed. Considering Jiang Xiao Hai’s timid nature and his delayed reporting, yet consistent statements, the task force decides to clear him of suspicion.

Now, the task force knows the suspect is a young man from Guangdong with an accent. Zheng Bei receives a lead that the suspect’s fingerprints were found on a convenience store phone. Ding Guo Zhu verifies this, confirming a match.

Zheng Bei promptly takes action, leading the task force in a search around the convenience store. He also changes into plain clothes with Gu Yi Ran to discreetly observe the dance hall.

Coincidentally, an informant named Mouse brings news that someone is privately selling “Red Dragon.” The Guangdong man, A Liang, is caught in the act in the dance hall changing room, and upon being spotted by Mouse, he flees in a taxi.

Taxi driver Monkey brings A Liang to an abandoned taxi factory, where Er Jin’s men plan to eliminate him. However, A Liang manages to escape. Furious, Er Jin orders his men to find A Liang before the police do.

That night, A Liang conducts a deal in an abandoned residential building, armed with a gun. After the transaction, he rests in a derelict room. The next morning, Zheng Bei receives intelligence about a suspicious person and rushes to the scene. He questions a vendor on the street and discovers a secret entrance to the building.

Upon entering, Zheng Bei sees two people fighting over drugs. One of them, realizing the situation, takes a little girl hostage. In a critical moment, Jiang Xiao Hai rushes in, risking everything to tackle the assailant and rescue the girl, Mao Mao. Zheng Bei seizes the opportunity to subdue the man, resolving the crisis.

This sequence of events brings the task force one step closer to the truth.
