Episode 14 recap: Yao Xiaoshan and Zhang Guimei Speak Their Minds After a Few Drinks

In this episode, Gu Yu's tenacity earns her the chance to continue her education, even if it means sitting in the hallway to attend classes. The teachers are moved by her spirit and open their doors, ensuring she can hear everything clearly. In contrast, Liu Xiying takes a different path; she meets Yuan Shuai and often sneaks out at night for secret dates, which Gu Yu unfortunately discovers.

Concerned about Liu Xiying neglecting her studies, Gu Yu sternly advises her to cherish this opportunity. To keep the secret under wraps, Gu Yu suggests Liu Xiying take thorough notes for her to review, warning that she might have to inform the teachers otherwise.

After the monthly exams, the teachers finally relax and start planning for a fun weekend. Chen Sihai, a teacher who hasn’t been home for months, sets out for home but finds no one on the other end of the phone.

Meanwhile, Ding Xiaoxiao notices Yao Xiaoshan looking sharp and mistakenly thinks he’s going on a blind date. Yao Xiaoshan quickly clarifies that he’s attending a gathering with male classmates.

Just then, Chen Sihai rushes back to inform everyone that Principal Zhang Guimei is calling an emergency meeting. Upon entering, she announces that she just needs a moment to speak. She praises Teacher Wei Tingyun’s leadership in Chinese class, noting that their students rank among the top in the county and are just a step away from elite schools. However, the physics scores have become a weak point for the girls' school, putting her in a tough spot with the higher-ups.

Facing this dilemma, Zhang Guimei turns to Yao Xiaoshan for help. Though he feels helpless, he candidly states that physics teaching relies on experiments and that the lack of equipment makes it hard to engage students. Zhang Guimei understands that fixing the equipment issue takes time, but emphasizes that teachers must find ways to spark student interest.

Ding Xiaoxiao and Chen Sihai support Yao Xiaoshan, urging Principal Zhang to offer more understanding and support.

As the meeting ends, a commotion outside disrupts the calm; Chen Sihai's family has come looking for him. They are upset that he hasn’t returned home in a while. Zhang Guimei quickly steps in to soothe the situation and invites them to dinner.

Unexpectedly, more family members join the meal. Throughout the dinner, although Zhang Guimei smiles, she feels a mix of emotions inside. She praises Chen Sihai’s contributions to the school, only to be met with complaints from his family. It dawns on her that his family has a strong matriarchal influence.

To lighten the mood, Zhang Guimei raises a toast, and her generous spirit wins everyone over. She takes the opportunity to promise that Chen Sihai can focus on his work this semester before taking a break to be with his family.

Meanwhile, Yao Xiaoshan faces temptation to switch jobs during the gathering, feeling down and drowning his sorrows in alcohol. On the other side, Gu Yu borrows notes from Liu Xiying for her review, catching the attention of Cai Guizhi, who jokingly remarks on Gu Yu's boldness in using her notes and generously offers her own as well. The two top students maintain a competitive yet supportive friendship.

Later that night, Chen Sihai escorts the drunken Zhang Guimei back to school, where they run into a similarly inebriated Yao Xiaoshan. Under the influence, Yao Xiaoshan candidly expresses his thoughts to Zhang Guimei, even giving her the nickname "Zhang Papercut" for being too strict. Zhang Guimei takes it in stride, engaging in a friendly chat and even singing, which leaves Gu Yu feeling embarrassed and helpless.

The next morning, Yao Xiaoshan regrets his drunken antics while Chen Sihai reminisces about the "memorable moments" with a chuckle. Just as Yao Xiaoshan considers resigning to avoid the embarrassment, Principal Zhang unexpectedly announces his appointment as the head of the senior class.

Surprised yet sensing it as a scheme from the principal, Yao Xiaoshan realizes that avoiding the issue won't help. He understands that facing challenges head-on is the only way to prove himself.
