Episode 1 recap: Wei Zhao's Assassination Attempt on Teng Rui Fails
Today, the Kingdom of Daling and the Kingdom of Wei are holding peace talks at the Fanglin Garden in Daling's capital, Qingkang. The venue is heavily guarded, with sentries patrolling to ensure safety. Meanwhile, the kitchen is bustling with activity, preparing a feast to welcome the Wei envoys.
Jiang Ci secretly takes a jug of fine wine, hoping to find a quiet spot to enjoy it alone. However, she unexpectedly encounters the elegantly dressed Lian'er, who rushes past her. Despite Lian'er's stunning beauty, her expression is cold as ice. Without much thought, Jiang Ci cleverly avoids the guards and hides behind a large tree to savor the wine. She dreams of catching a glimpse of the renowned General Pei Yan and decides to go collect Lingjiuhua under the moonlight.
Unbeknownst to her, a silver-masked man from Daling is secretly watching her every move. Just as she loses herself in the wine, the silver-masked man suddenly appears, threatening her with a sword. Startled, Jiang Ci panics. However, when the man notices her waist token from the Moonfall, he hesitates and refrains from attacking. At that moment, Teng Rui leads the Wei envoy delegation to the scene, prompting the silver-masked man to become more alert. He loosens his grip on Jiang Ci, giving her a chance to escape.
Pei Yan arrives on horseback, greeted warmly by General Lei with tea. The two display a seamless rapport and elegance. Teng Rui initially intends to intimidate Pei Yan but ends up being effortlessly disarmed. Jiang Ci is deeply impressed by Pei Yan's skill and intelligence. As the peace talks commence, Lian'er performs a war dance that earns Teng Rui's admiration.
However, when Lian'er offers a toast to Teng Rui, General Lei's vigilance creates a tense atmosphere. Jiang Ci notices Lian'er’s reluctance, raising her suspicions. The silver-masked man attempts to assassinate Teng Rui, but at a critical moment, Pei Yan pulls Lian'er aside for questioning and discovers her ulterior motives. Yet, Teng Rui, entranced, does not pursue the matter further.
Worried about becoming a target for the silver-masked man, Jiang Ci reluctantly draws a dagger to fight back but is subdued once again. The wine jug crashes to the ground, alerting the guards, prompting the silver-masked man to shoot an arrow at Teng Rui and flee with Lian'er. Pei Yan saves Jiang Ci and takes her back to his residence for treatment.
The silver-masked man is revealed to be Wei Zhao, the commander of the Bright Division in Daling. Known for his ruthless methods, he is widely disliked by the people. He had plotted the assassination of Teng Rui but failed due to Pei Yan's intervention. It turns out that Teng Rui may be connected to Wang Shiquan, the former guard of King Qi, who disappeared after participating in negotiations regarding the Moonfall. Wei Zhao suspects Wang has taken refuge in Wei and manipulated rumors of the "Heavenly Map" to lure Teng Rui to the peace talks, aiming to eliminate him.
Jiang Ci, gravely injured and unconscious, prompts Pei Yan to seek the help of the renowned healer Cui Liang. Pei Yan is determined to uncover the identity of the assassin to fulfill his ambitions of entering the court as a minister. Meanwhile, Wei Zhao, frustrated by his thwarted plans, intensifies his surveillance of Pei Yan's residence. With the efforts of Pei Yan and his guards, the truth begins to surface, while Jiang Ci gradually awakens under Cui Liang's care.
