Episode 18 recap: Pei Yan Discovers Wei Zhao's True Identity
In Episode 18, following He Yonglin's death, He Zhenwen presents Pei Yan with a daunting demand: he wants Pei Yan to exchange Jiang Ci's life for the secret ledger of Rong Yu Die at Bihe Mountain Manor. This puts Pei Yan in a deep moral dilemma.Meanwhile, Jiang Ci anxiously asks Wei Zhao for a small clay cat, a token she agreed upon with her master as a signal. She plans to go to Yuzhou to find him. However, Wei Zhao firmly refuses her request. At this time, the city of Moonfall is preparing for the election of a new mayor, and Elder Ping Shu specifically sends a messenger to invite Wei Zhao back to participate in the election. Yet, Wei Zhao, on a mission from the Emperor of the Great Liang, Xie Che, is investigating Lu Yu's secret stash of weapons in Southern Ling. He intends to report this to the court and then return to Moonfall.
Wei Zhao learns that Pei Yan has moved He Zhenwen to the dungeon at Changfeng Dock. He deduces that He Zhenwen holds a crucial ledger related to Lu Yu's dealings, so he sends Yi Fei to search for it discreetly. Meanwhile, Jiang Ci decides to set out alone to find her master but is consumed with anxiety over potential miscommunication. In a moment of inspiration, she crafts a small clay cat as a substitute.
Rong Yu Die puts pressure on Pei Yan through Granny Du, demanding he handle He Yonglin's funeral arrangements to appease He Zhenwen and urging him to hand over the ledger. When Pei Yan visits He Zhenwen, he unexpectedly discovers that the wound on He Yonglin's hand matches the dark arrow of a silver masked assassin, leading him to suspect Wei Zhao's true identity. He decides to reassign Wei Zhao from Southern Ling.
Granny Du’s henchmen attempt to assassinate Jiang Ci, but Pei Yan arrives just in time to save her and takes her back to Changfeng Dock for protection. Upon hearing the news, Wei Zhao rushes to Changfeng Dock, but is ultimately thwarted by Pei Yan, who prevents him from taking Jiang Ci. They agree to set off for Yuzhou the next day, while Pei Yan plans to return to Qingkang later.
However, Jiang Ci does not leave as planned. After learning about Pei Yan’s suspicions regarding Wei Zhao, she worries for his safety and decides to return to Changfeng Dock. Cleverly, she distracts Pei Yan and seizes the dark arrows he had collected, handing them over to Wei Zhao as evidence to warn him to keep his identity hidden.
When Pei Yan discovers Jiang Ci's disappearance and the theft of the dark arrows, he immediately realizes Wei Zhao's involvement and storms over in a rage. Wei Zhao remains calm, skillfully redirecting Pei Yan's attention away from Jiang Ci while revealing the truth behind the weapons case, temporarily alleviating Pei Yan's suspicions.
