Episode 27 recap: Jiang Ci Infected with Dysentery While Trying to Save the People
In Episode 27, as night falls, Lu Yu orders the Zhenyuan army to rest. He believes he has successfully incited the people's hatred towards Wei Zhao by using the Shadow Pavilion's spies and is confident that he will capture Moonset City the next day. He invites Pei Yan to celebrate with drinks.
Meanwhile, Wei Zhao plans to wait until dark to figure out how to transport the bodies of the deceased out of the city. However, Elder Ji secretly opens the city gates to retrieve his son's body. Wei Zhao rushes to pull Elder Ji back and arranges for ropes to bring the bodies up from the city wall one by one. Upon learning this, Lu Yu orders a rain of arrows, and despite the gunfire, Wei Zhao and his group manage to bring the spies' bodies to the city wall. Pei Yan quickly intervenes, urging Lu Yu to abandon the attack on Moonset City, arguing that the citizens are united in their resolve, making it difficult for Lu Yu to gain their support even if he captures the city.
Wei Zhao risks his life to recover all the spies' bodies, but the people still harbor deep resentment towards him. Hong Jie, aware of Wei Zhao's good intentions, advises him to clarify things with the citizens, but Wei Zhao feels it's unnecessary. Jiang Ci learns about Wei Zhao's situation from a soldier delivering supplies and is convinced he will not abandon the people. That night, she sends him a paper kite as a gesture of goodwill.
Wei Zhao writes a letter to Xie Che detailing Lu Yu's unauthorized attack on Moonset. He also instructs Ping Shu to spread the news of Jiang Ci's presence in Moonset, asking Yan Qiao Shuang to find her. When Xie Che receives Wei Zhao's letter, he is furious and immediately sends a message to Pei Yan, ordering him to bring Lu Yu back to Qingkang.
Pei Yan volunteers to negotiate in Moonset, urging Wei Zhao to surrender the city. Lu Yu eagerly agrees and gives Pei Yan five days to prepare; when the deadline arrives, he intends to attack. Early the next morning, Pei Yan, accompanied by Tong Min, arrives in Moonset. He straightforwardly presents his offer to Wei Zhao: he is willing to delay the Zhenyuan army for five days if Wei Zhao hands over the account books of Rong Yu Die.
Jiang Ci falls ill with dysentery due to exhaustion. When Yu Lian arrives to deliver supplies, she unexpectedly encounters her mother, and they embrace in tears. Yu Lian and Hong Jie inform Wei Zhao about Jiang Ci's condition, prompting him to rush to her aid. Pei Yan also wishes to visit Jiang Ci in the outskirts, but Tong Min desperately tries to stop him, advising him to think of the long-term interests of Changfeng Wei. Pei Yan sends Tong Min to find the Zhenyuan army's doctor and acquire the best medicine for Jiang Ci.
Wei Zhao instructs Ping Shu to secretly lead troops out of the city to seek help in Qingkang while he stays behind to defend Moonset. After arranging everything, he eagerly rushes to see Jiang Ci, but she remains in a coma.
Wei Zhao carefully cared for her, preparing medicine according to the prescription and personally boiling it to feed Jiang Ci.
After relentless efforts, Doctor Ling finally helped the sick citizens begin to recover. During the day, Wei Zhao stood watch at the city wall, and at night, he returned to take care of Jiang Ci. Gradually, she began to heal. When the townspeople heard the news, they came to see her and expressed their gratitude. Wei Zhao arrived shortly after, bowing deeply to Jiang Ci to show his respect.
The two walked together in the snow, with Jiang Ci stepping in Wei Zhao's footprints. She vaguely remembered him visiting her in the infirmary, but Wei Zhao vehemently denied it. Jiang Ci invited Wei Zhao to fly kites together, and he carried her as they walked, both of them finding warmth in each other's presence.
As time passed, winter turned to spring. Hong Jie and Yu Lian's relationship blossomed, and Jiang Ci was happy for them, which made her think of Wei Zhao. After experiencing life and death together multiple times, they had long etched each other deeply into their hearts.
Lu Yu secretly sent someone back to Qingkang to fetch his son, Lu Dalang, planning to fight to the death against Moonset and never return to Qingkang. An Cheng learned of this and immediately informed Pei Yan, who felt a sense of dread for Wei Zhao. Wei Zhao handed a white jade hairpin to Hong Jie, hoping he would protect the citizens of Moonset just like Elder Hong. Hong Jie urged him to stay in Moonset after the battle was over.
Families of the deceased came to confront Wei Zhao, and Elder Ping stepped forward to defend him. Hong Jie willingly took on all the blame, but the grieving families were not appeased; they threw vegetable leaves at Wei Zhao in their anger. Jiang Ci rushed forward to shield him.
In front of everyone, Wei Zhao knelt down to apologize to the families of the deceased. He confessed that he had threatened Hong Jie with a sword to prevent the elders from opening the city gates, which led to the tragic deaths of the spies. He remained kneeling, unable to rise. As heavy snow began to fall, Wei Zhao knelt in penance, with Jiang Ci by his side. Suddenly, the horn sounded, and Jiang Ci swallowed the rest of her words, planning to wait until after the battle to share them with Wei Zhao.
