Episode 28 recap: Pei Yan and Wei Zhao Join Forces to Rescue Jiang Ci

In Episode 28, Yan Qiao Shuang learns that Jiang Ci has been trapped and lured to Moonfall City. Without hesitation, she rushes to save her. However, Lu Yu's Zhenyuan army has surrounded the city tightly, making it impossible for Yan Qiao Shuang to enter. To get around this, she knocks out a lone soldier and disguises herself in the Zhenyuan army’s uniform to infiltrate their camp.

Pei Yan buys Wei Zhao five days to prepare, and Wei Zhao sends Ping Shu out of the city to gather reinforcements. As the five days quickly pass, Lu Yu sends people to escort the citizens of Moonfall City to the city gates, pressuring Wei Zhao to surrender. Wei Zhao is ready for battle, relying on Ping Shu to bring help, and they plan to fight the Zhenyuan army to the death.

Yi Fei quietly exits the city and soon meets up with Ping Shu. They signal Wei Zhao, who then commands the soldiers to release a flurry of paper kites from the city. These kites soar over the Zhenyuan troops, and the soldiers cut the strings, causing pouches of plush to scatter among the enemy ranks, spreading a shigella bacteria virus that sends them into a panic.

With the city gates wide open, Wei Zhao leads his troops out to confront the enemy. Yu Lian covers Jiang Ci and the others as they rescue the captured citizens. Yan Qiao Shuang recognizes Jiang Ci and immediately calls out to her, but Wei Zhao, without listening to any explanations, attacks Yan Qiao Shuang. Jiang Ci desperately tries to clarify that Yan Qiao Shuang is not part of the Zhenyuan army but her master. However, Wei Zhao is unyielding, pressing forward against Yan Qiao Shuang. In a sudden realization, Jiang Ci understands that Wei Zhao is keeping her close to kill Yan Qiao Shuang.

Pei Yan rushes into the fray to rescue Jiang Ci. As Yu Lian and Pei Yan fight side by side, Jiang Ci refuses to leave with Pei Yan, resulting in her capture by the Zhenyuan army’s deputy general. Wei Zhao manages to capture Yan Qiao Shuang alive.

Ping Shu leads an attack on Liangzhou, setting fire to the Zhenyuan army's supplies. With enemies closing in, Lu Yu has no choice but to retreat to Liangzhou. Jiang Ci is taken to the Zhenyuan army camp, where Pei Yan claims she is a servant of the Pei family, attempting to take her away. The deputy general refuses, instead putting Jiang Ci into a prisoner cart.

Wei Zhao tortures Yan Qiao Shuang for information, but she refuses to reveal the truth about the past and insults him instead. Out of consideration for Jiang Ci, Wei Zhao spares Yan Qiao Shuang’s life. Lu Yu visits the prison to interrogate Jiang Ci. She stands her ground, which infuriates Lu Yu, who drags her out, causing a small clay cat in her hands to shatter. Inside is a letter from Prince Qi, Xie Chun, to his daughter. Lu Yu is overjoyed, realizing that Jiang Ci is Xie Chun's daughter.

Lu Yu's son, Lu Dalang, suffers a sudden relapse and dies, leaving Lu Yu with no time to deal with Jiang Ci. He temporarily confines her in the prison and immediately heads to Qingkang to confront Emperor Xie Che. Pei Yan and An Cheng, along with Tong Min, intercept Lu Yu on his way, urging him not to rebel. Lu Yu ignores their pleas, and a fierce battle ensues, leaving him severely injured. As Pei Yan attempts to rescue Jiang Ci, An Cheng, fearing for his safety, knocks him out and quickly carries him away.

Meanwhile, Ah Liu is hiding in the Zhenyuan army camp. Seeing Lu Yu take Jiang Ci away, he quickly reports to Hong Jie, who immediately informs Wei Zhao. Wei Zhao can’t continue questioning Yan Qiao Shuang and leads his troops to pursue Lu Yu.

Upon stepping outside, Wei Zhao sees that the coffin flowers planted by Jiang Ci have bloomed. The townsfolk are bustling around, sharing the news. On the way, Wei Zhao encounters Pei Yan, who groggily wakes up to realize that Jiang Ci hasn’t been rescued. He wants to return to save her, and it’s only then that Wei Zhao informs him Jiang Ci has been taken away by Lu Yu.

Wei Zhao and Pei Yan discuss their plan to work together to rescue Jiang Ci. Lu Yu leads the Zhenyuan army onto a large ship, and Pei Yan chases to the shore, firing arrows at the ship to buy Wei Zhao some time. Seizing the opportunity, Wei Zhao boards the ship to save Jiang Ci, but the key to the iron chains is in Lu Yu's possession, leaving him powerless. Sensing something is wrong, Lu Yu quickly returns to the cabin. Eager to save Jiang Ci, Wei Zhao and Lu Yu engage in a fierce battle.

The time agreed upon by Pei Yan and Wei Zhao passes, but Wei Zhao still hasn’t emerged. Pei Yan decides to lower the water gate to block the Zhenyuan army's ship. Lu Yu immediately returns to the deck, and Mr. Si, who has been lurking near Lu Yu for years, hands a tiger talisman to Wei Zhao. Wei Zhao uses the talisman to unlock the iron chains binding Jiang Ci.

After waiting for a while without seeing Wei Zhao and Jiang Ci emerge, Lu Yu flaunts his power on the deck, certain that Pei Yan won’t dare to lower the water gate. In response, Pei Yan takes a flaming arrow and shoots it at the water gate switch. The gate drops instantly, trapping the Zhenyuan army’s ship. Flames engulf the ship, which begins to sway dangerously, causing soldiers to lose their footing and fall into the water. Taking advantage of the chaos, Lu Yu jumps overboard to escape.

Wei Zhao pulls Jiang Ci into the river, and they swim with all their strength to the shore. Jiang Ci, having nearly drowned, loses consciousness. Wei Zhao stays by her side, taking care of her. Yi Fei arrives to report back to Wei Zhao, who instructs him to escort Yan Qiao Shuang to Qingkang. Mr. Si meets with Wei Zhao, expressing regret for not capturing Lu Yu. Wei Zhao asks him to write a letter to Emperor Xie Che of the Great Liang, surrendering the tiger talisman and bringing the Zhenyuan army under Great Liang’s command. Wei Zhao hopes to advocate for Moonfall’s rightful interests after returning to Qingkang.

An Cheng finds Lu Yu’s decree against Great Liang and learns that Jiang Ci is the daughter of Prince Qi, Xie Chun, which surprises him greatly. Jiang Ci slowly regains consciousness and sees a letter written by her father, Xie Chun, before his death. As she realizes her true identity, she feels a mix of shock and joy. Wei Zhao watches this scene from outside the door, feeling a complex swirl of emotions.

Jiang Ci confronts Wei Zhao, demanding to know the whereabouts of her master, Yan Qiao Shuang. She lists Wei Zhao’s actions one by one, growing angrier with each point, and finally spills the porridge he had prepared on the ground.
