Episode 39 recap: Wei Zhao Sacrifices Himself for the People of Yue Luo

In Episode 39, the warriors of the Daliang Kingdom unite with the defenders of Yue Luo City to form the Liang Yue Alliance. Today marks their first battle together. Pei Yan and Wei Zhao stand at the front of the troops, inspiring each warrior with their resolute words, vowing to resist the invasion from Wei Country.

On the eve of their departure, Wei Zhao secretly meets Jiang Ci for an emotional farewell. Jiang Ci, filled with worry, repeatedly urges him to be careful and promises to wait for his safe return. However, Wei Zhao harbors a secret—he has been poisoned and does not want Jiang Ci to see him in a weakened state. So, taking advantage of her momentary distraction, he gently knocks her unconscious and entrusts Uncle Ping with her safe return to Jiang Family Village.

On the battlefield, under Wei Zhao’s brilliant command, the Liang Yue Alliance fights valiantly. Although the enemy led by Lu Yu and Gao Xiu is numerous, they suffer heavy losses from the fierce attacks of the Phoenix Crossbow, causing Gao Xiu to flee in panic. Wei Zhao and Pei Yan coordinate perfectly, launching a two-pronged attack that leads to a resounding victory, capturing Gao Xiu alive.

Defeated and cornered, Gao Xiu is forced to sign a ten-year non-aggression pact with Daliang, resulting in thunderous cheers from the troops. After the battle, Wei Zhao collapses due to his poison and is urgently taken to a secret residence in Yue Luo for treatment. When he regains consciousness, he is touched to find Jiang Ci by his side, caring for him despite the danger.

Wei Zhao feels both grateful and pained, scolding her for her reckless return, but Jiang Ci’s determination and affection make it impossible for him to resist her presence. Pei Yan visits, and they discuss seeking justice for Xiao Haitian and the people of Yue Luo, aiming to uncover the truth behind the death of Prince Qi, Xie Chun.

Pei Yan not only supports Wei Zhao’s decision but also brings Xie Chi to Yue Luo to share the city’s struggles over the years, hoping Xie Chi can lend them assistance. Moved by their plight, Xie Chi persuades Xie Che to thoroughly investigate the prince’s death and restore justice to Yue Luo. Although reluctant, Xie Che agrees to hold a celebration in three days and plans to use the occasion to reward Wei Zhao. However, he has grown wary of Wei Zhao, especially after learning that a renowned healer is aiding him, and he is determined to eliminate the threat.

On the eve of the celebration, Wei Zhao is aware of Xie Che’s scheme. He meticulously arranges measures to ensure Jiang Ci’s safety. The next morning, he dons wedding attire for a private ceremony, expressing his deep feelings and commitment to Jiang Ci. He then sets out with a resolve to face the celebration alongside Pei Yan.

At the celebration, Wei Zhao stands up despite the danger, intent on clearing the Xiao family’s name. However, the sudden arrival of the Yue Luo citizens disrupts their plans, and Xie Che uses them as hostages to force Wei Zhao to alter his strategy. To protect the innocent citizens, Wei Zhao endures humiliation, taking the blame upon himself and kneeling to Xie Che, pleading for a reduction in taxes and the restoration of the citizens' freedom.

With the combined efforts of Pei Yan, Xie Chi, and the other warriors, Xie Che is ultimately forced to agree to pardon Yue Luo. The citizens rejoice, experiencing a rebirth. After fulfilling his mission, Wei Zhao quietly stands by Jiang Ci in the distance, looking forward to the peaceful life that awaits them.
