Episode 1 recap: A Million and Qu Zheng's Pretense of Marriage

In Episode 1, Jin Bai Wan steps out of his house only to be surrounded by a group of eager fans. They’re all excited about his new work and jokingly mention that only Jin Bai Wan could win over the proud Jin Mu Qiu from the Jin Family Escort Agency. With a wry smile, he exchanges a few words and slips away, pondering over the dark clouds in the sky, fearing rain is on the way.

Upon arriving home, he is met with a troubling sight—Jin Mu Qiu is throwing a fit, unwilling to marry the distant lord of Taoyuan Valley. She expresses her contentment with her current life, writing stories and living freely, and admits she knows nothing about the young lord, Yu Lingfeng.

Jin Bai Wan quickly steps in to comfort her, promising he has a clever plan. Coincidentally, Yu Lingfeng arrives at that moment, but he’s unable to meet the lady. Doubts creep into his mind about whether this marriage truly has her approval. Just then, Jin Bai Wan brings Jin Mu Qiu out, but she’s holding a fan partially concealing her face. When she lowers it, it reveals some “decorative” blemishes.

Rather than being put off, Yu Lingfeng admires this unique “sincerity” and earnestly asks for her feelings about the marriage. Unexpectedly, upon seeing Yu Lingfeng's handsome face, Jin Mu Qiu's resistance dissipates, and she happily agrees.

This leaves Jin Bai Wan in a difficult position. He harbors deep feelings for Jin Mu Qiu, especially since she saved him from danger five years ago, a debt he can’t repay. Now, he finds himself unable to provide a proper dowry, causing him great anxiety. Just then, the escort agency, short on staff, turns down a task to transport sacred texts, prompting Jin Bai Wan to step up and personally undertake the journey to prepare the dowry for Jin Mu Qiu.

He arrives in Furong Town, where gossip abounds about a talented musician, Qu Zheng. Initially indifferent, Jin Bai Wan is soon captivated by Qu Zheng’s charm and stops to listen. However, a group of unwanted guests targets the cargo he’s transporting, rumored to be a long-lost text, the "Puyuan Scripture." In a critical moment, Qu Zheng uses his musical talent to diffuse the crisis with ease.

While grateful, Jin Bai Wan begins to sense something amiss, as it seems all the troubles are somehow linked to Qu Zheng. He faces several more dangers, each time skillfully resolved by Qu Zheng, but the musician's “kindness” only heightens Jin Bai Wan’s unease. Things take a turn for the worse when Yu Chen, in collusion with the Mice Gang, sets a trap, capturing both men.

It becomes clear that this is a carefully orchestrated scheme aimed at seizing the nonexistent "Puyuan Scripture." The Jin Family Escort Agency is thrown into chaos upon learning the news, worried for Jin Bai Wan’s safety. Yu Lingfeng calmly analyzes the situation, believing there’s more to the story, prioritizing Jin Mu Qiu’s safety while vowing to rescue Jin Bai Wan.

In their predicament, Jin Bai Wan and Qu Zheng support each other, cleverly using a special wooden box from the Jin Family Escort Agency as cover, pretending to be a married couple in distress. They cleverly threaten with the box’s “explosion,” ultimately creating an opportunity to escape. However, Yu Chen suddenly appears, seemingly at odds with the Mice Gang, but actually takes them back to his estate.

Though caught off guard, Jin Bai Wan secretly appreciates Yu Chen’s “help,” as it adds an unexpected twist to their escape plan.
