Episode 2 recap: Walking Together with Qu Zheng
In the second episode, Bai Wan secretly hopes that she might one day marry the charming Qu Zheng, but she knows all too well that they can only be friends. As she’s lost in thought, a subordinate of Yu Chen interrupts her. Both Bai Wan and Qu Zheng have sensed something off about Yu Chen, especially since they haven’t revealed their true identities to him, yet he seems to know everything.
Feeling that it’s best to leave, Qu Zheng suggests they say goodbye to Yu Chen. However, Yu Chen insists that while Qu Zheng can leave, Bai Wan must stay a few more days. Naturally, Bai Wan is reluctant, but to her surprise, Qu Zheng agrees and claims that their earlier marriage ceremony was just a performance.
Though Yu Chen is puzzled, he doesn’t press the matter further and tells Qu Zheng to come back another day. Bai Wan chides Qu Zheng for not being loyal, to which he simply smiles and reassures her that everything will work out.
Meanwhile, Jin Mu Qiu and Ling Feng embark on their journey. Ling Feng is curious about what Jin Mu Qiu is busy with, but she refuses to let him see her belongings. During a playful scuffle, her items fall, and in a moment of panic, she accidentally pushes Ling Feng, injuring his hand.
Jin Mu Qiu hurriedly tends to his injury but spills the medicine in the process. While she’s distracted, Ling Feng discusses marriage with his subordinate, focusing solely on family interests without mentioning any personal feelings. Hearing this, Jin Mu Qiu feels a mix of emotions, realizing that Ling Feng doesn't harbor romantic feelings for her.
Back with Bai Wan, Yu Chen has arranged for her to bathe and change. She’s still mulling over Qu Zheng's unreliability, but recalls his words, wondering if he truly has a backup plan. Indeed, Yu Chen eavesdrops outside, but Qu Zheng arrives just in time, fabricating a story about having thrown important items out of Yu Chen’s residence, successfully deceiving him so they can escape.
At the lantern festival, a masked figure keeps a watchful eye on them. Rather than avoiding the attention, Qu Zheng pulls Bai Wan close to buy masks, making her feel a sense of déjà vu, even though she can’t remember where she’s seen Qu Zheng before.
Yu Chen's men soon arrive, prompting Bai Wan to run for her life and discover that the Dimo Gang is colluding with Yu Chen. Thanks to Qu Zheng’s protection, they manage to evade capture. Bai Wan is amazed by Qu Zheng’s skills and suspects he has training in martial arts. He leads her away, and they meet up with Su Zhuo Zhuo, allowing all three of them to leave the dangerous area.
On the way, Bai Wan learns that they’re all headed in the same direction, and she agrees to accompany Qu Zheng. During their meal, Qu Zheng discovers Bai Wan loves spicy food, and learns that she has never left the Jin family, which leaves him feeling a bit disappointed since the person he is searching for doesn’t like spicy food. Meanwhile, Zi Jing continues searching for Bai Wan but finds no leads.
Jin Mu Qiu feels lonely and sad, and when Ling Feng sends her some fruit as a gesture of comfort, she’s disheartened to find that all the maidservants received the same gift, plunging her spirits even lower.
As Bai Wan and Qu Zheng continue their journey, Qu Zheng’s thoughtful care makes her grateful. When she learns that he was bitten by a snake while saving her, she feels a wave of guilt. Finally, Bai Wan confesses her secret to Qu Zheng—she was saved by a young lady from the Jin family five years ago and has kept her true identity hidden all this time.
She pulls out a pendant she’s been carrying, and as Qu Zheng sees it, a complex emotion flashes in his eyes.
