Episode 7 recap: Tu Deng Opposes Za Xi's Pursuit of Tibetan Opera
In Episode 7, Qu Zong comforts his father, telling him not to get upset and puts the resignation letter back in Suo Lang's room. Soon after, Xu Wenjie arrives at Gaji Courtyard to inform Yang Jin that she will attend a vocational training class tomorrow, where she can acquire a valuable skill. Additionally, Xu Wenjie encourages Zidan to find a job, but Zidan is lazy and prefers to lounge around in the courtyard, sipping milk tea. He either complains that some jobs are too tiring or that others pay too little, which frustrates his wife, Wang Mu.
Meanwhile, Tu Deng observes Xu Shaojie running around to help others and complains that Xu is neglecting Suo Lang's situation. Xu responds that he will take care of Suo Lang, but Tu Deng hopes he can persuade Suo Lang to continue pursuing a civil service exam, as that is his only true path forward.
Now that Ge Sang has arrived in Lhasa, her brother, Jiumei, can only temporarily house her in his dormitory, where only male athletes live. He reminds her to keep the door locked. The next morning, Ge Sang heads to a nearby Tibetan opera troupe to look for Za Xi and coincidentally encounters the Nangka Tibetan Opera Troupe.
At this moment, Tu Deng sees Za Xi backstage at the opera and recalls the resignation letter he found the day before. He asks Za Xi to tidy up and come speak with him. When Tu Deng steps outside, he immediately notices Ge Sang, who comments that while the singers sound good, they are not sincere in their performances. She mentions that a friend of hers used to sing with heart.
Unable to find Za Xi there, Ge Sang decides to continue her search elsewhere. Just as she leaves, Za Xi comes out from backstage. Tu Deng brings Za Xi back to Gaji Courtyard and angrily questions him about the resignation letter. Za Xi expresses that he feels unsuited for a career as a doctor and wishes to join the opera troupe instead.
Tu Deng warns Za Xi to abandon this foolish idea. He argues that while the world can afford to lose a good performer, it cannot afford to lose a good doctor, as doctors are responsible for saving lives. To Tu Deng, Za Xi is the pride and hope of the entire family. They have supported him through five years of medical school so that he can become an excellent doctor.
Though Tu Deng knows his son will resent him for this, he believes that in time, his sons will understand his good intentions. Za Xi, feeling that his passion for Tibetan opera is being stifled, mistakenly thinks Suo Lang is the one who betrayed him by giving the letter to their father, harboring resentment as a result. To ease the tension between the brothers, Grandma Yu Zhen encourages them to help her with tasks, recalling past experiences that reveal Suo Lang's goodness as a brother, leading to a reconciliation.
Tu Deng meets his disciple, Dajie, to discuss his desire to restage the eight major Tibetan operas in their entirety. Dajie agrees to balance training and performances to make this happen. Xu Shaojie brings a package sent by a comrade to Qu Zong. Upon hearing it was sent from Shigatse, Suo Lang suddenly gets an idea and urgently asks Xu Shaojie to inquire about Gangba sheep.
Xu Shaojie contacts his comrade Gongbu, but due to the scarcity of Gangba sheep, Gongbu cannot find two hundred sheep right away and suggests thinking of other solutions. After hanging up, Xu takes the opportunity to advise Suo Lang to consider the civil service exam instead of diving headfirst into entrepreneurship, emphasizing the importance of building capital and connections. This frustrates Suo Lang.
Later, Xu Shaojie visits Zidan again to discuss job opportunities. Zidan's unambitious attitude angers Wang Mu, leading to an argument between the couple. Xu Shaojie decides to leave but runs into Suo Lang just as he tries to speak with him, only to be met with a cold shoulder. Zidan privately warns Suo Lang that Xu Shaojie is just trying to gain favor with Tu Deng, which leaves Suo Lang feeling uneasy.
On the day of the job skills training class, only a handful of people show up, including Yang Jin, who goes off to explore job opportunities instead of responding to Xu Shaojie. Moreover, the few attendees seem disengaged and leave as soon as the session ends, leaving Xu feeling defeated. Meanwhile, Ashley attends a Tibetan costume party and is fortunate to meet Mr. He from the Chongkang Group.
