Episode 21 recap: Xian Disrupts Zhi's Wedding
In Episode 21, Zhi and Zou Jie tie the knot, while Xian, as the mother, feels a mix of joy and sorrow. Years of close companionship leave her feeling lonely on her daughter's wedding day, prompting her to share a few drinks with Zhi. Noticing her mother’s melancholy, Zhi gently reassures Xian, promising to visit often. To ensure her daughter's happiness, Xian makes a toast to the factory director and manager, asking them to look after Zhi, and later takes the stage to toast her friends and family, hoping her in-laws will treat Zhi like their own daughter.
After several rounds of drinks, Xian, slightly tipsy, suggests singing for entertainment. Unfortunately, she picks "Hua Hao Yue Zheng Yuan," a beautiful but inappropriate choice. Despite Zhi's attempts to dissuade her, Xian insists on finishing the song. When she finally sobers up, she finds the guests have dispersed, mistakenly believing it’s due to her poor singing. Although Zhi feels frustrated, she ultimately helps Zou Jie escort her mother home, finding her endearing in her drunken state.
Zou Jie comforts Zhi, reminding her not to take things to heart, as it’s a joyous occasion that may have its hiccups. Upon returning to their new home, they are met with an unexpected outburst of anger from Zhi's father, who orders them to leave, forcing them to temporarily return to Zhi's family home. While Zhi blames her mother for the disruption, she begins to realize, with Zou Jie's encouragement, that she shouldn't be overly harsh.
The next morning, Zhi prepares a hangover remedy for Xian, but Xian’s ramblings frustrate her, leading to a scolding for choosing the wrong song. Hearing the commotion outside, Zou Jie rushes in to break up the argument, and both quickly head off to work. At the office, Zhi faces teasing from colleagues and criticism from her superiors due to her mother's antics, even losing her chance to compete, leaving her feeling resentful. Zou Jie fully supports Zhi, believing her skills are worthy of recognition and feeling that the director's decision is unfair.
That evening, Xian acknowledges her mistakes, cooks dinner as an apology, and promises to do better. Seizing the moment, Zhi advises her mother to finish the materials assigned by her father. Zou Jie privately thinks Zhi is being too harsh, but Zhi feels her mother’s behavior has lasting consequences and worries it will lead to more trouble for them. Xian, overhearing this, feels a mix of emotions.
To ease family tensions, Zou Jie tries to communicate with Zhi's father while Zhi faces her mother’s reproach alone, cleverly making excuses for Zou Jie's absence. When Zou Jie and Xian return, they run into Aunt Wang, who acknowledges Xian’s improvements. Zhi takes the opportunity to ask Aunt Wang to keep an eye on Xian.
During dinner, Zhi again brings up her father, causing Xian to become upset and refuse to answer, creating a tense atmosphere, which Zou Jie diffuses just in time. Zhi decides to spend the weekend at the library searching for clues about her father. On Sunday, while Zhi digs deeply at the library, Zou Jie helps Xian with household chores, and they enjoy each other's company.
Zhi returns home with a pile of documents, questioning whether any reporters are connected to her father. When she hears the name "Cong," she freezes, as there is a wealth of information about "Cong" in the library. Zhi's probing makes Xian irritable, prompting her to request some quiet.
These events complicate and deepen the relationships between Zhi, Zou Jie, and Xian, as they all strive to find balance and face life's challenges together.
