Episode 3 recap: Hui Opposes Xian Becoming a Movie Star
In Episode 3, Xian arrives at the train station with a suitcase, sitting patiently as she waits for the train. Meanwhile, Cong is asleep in bed and suddenly wakes up to realize it's almost 8 o'clock. He hurriedly gets up and rides his bicycle out. Xian falls asleep at the train station and misses Cong, instead waiting for Hui, who angrily drags her back home despite Xian's pleas. By the time Cong arrives, calling out for Xian, she has already left the station.
After forcibly bringing her daughter home, Hui locks the door, completely ignoring Xian's cries. Mr. Xu arrives at the photo studio for an interview and hears the shouting from upstairs. Hui, fearing a misunderstanding, explains that it's just her daughter wanting to go out, which she has prevented. Cong rushes over, and Hui calls him outside to scold him for trying to take her daughter away, warning him to stay away from Xian or she will fight back. Without hesitation, Hui sends Cong away.
Hui brings some food to Xian and insists that she help manage the studio instead of going out to work. In anger, Xian knocks the plate to the floor. Seeing this, Hui threatens Xian, saying that if she causes any more trouble, she will make her regret it. From that day on, Hui keeps a close eye on Xian, even watching her when she gets up for water, which makes Xian feel very uncomfortable. Cong has also tried to see Xian but doesn’t dare enter the studio. When Mr. Xu sees Cong standing at the door, he can only shake his head and sigh.
Xian seems to come to a realization and agrees to help her mother run the photo studio at the front desk, but she remains in a bad mood, treating customers coldly and being unresponsive. One day, Meng Yu Nong brings a movie star to take photos, but Xian shows no interest. The movie star seems to notice the way Meng Yu Nong looks at Xian and, upon hearing that Uncle Li is no longer around, takes Meng Yu Nong away.
However, Meng Yu Nong does not forget about Xian. The girl from the cinema has stuck in his mind, and he sends one of his associates to invite Xian to audition at the film company, promising to personally pick her up the next day.
Xian is excited about this opportunity, but Hui dismisses it as a trick to fool a young girl, leading to another conflict between mother and daughter. Xian defiantly questions her mother about what she would do if the boss actually comes the next day. Skeptical, Hui finally agrees that if he comes, she will let Xian go for the audition.
The next day, Xian eagerly awaits, but no one shows up for a long time. Hui decides to make lunch for Xian, urging her to eat. Just as Xian starts to feel disappointed, Meng Yu Nong arrives, acting gentlemanly. Noticing Hui’s worried demeanor, he suggests that Hui come along to see what’s happening. Hui, perhaps intimidated by Meng Yu Nong’s presence, finds herself compelled to get into the car.
On the way to the car, Hui asks how Meng Yu Nong and Xian know each other. Meng Yu Nong claims he saw Xian while passing by during a photo shoot and thought she would be great for acting, hoping she would give it a try. During the audition, Xian is noticeably nervous and her movements are awkward, but Meng Yu Nong thinks she does well. Hui seems to sense something and instinctively tries to stop her daughter from pursuing acting, also declining Meng Yu Nong's invitation to dinner that night.
Once home, Hui repeatedly questions Xian about how she met Meng Yu Nong. Xian, a bit impatient, explains that she doesn’t really remember him. Hui then flatly states that Xian is not allowed to pursue acting anymore. Xian accuses her mother of being selfish and emphasizes that if Meng Yu Nong comes looking for her again, she will definitely go for the audition, and her mother won’t be able to stop her.
From that day on, Xian often leans by the window waiting for Meng Yu Nong's arrival. Each time she hears a car horn, she hopes it’s him, only to be disappointed repeatedly, leaving her feeling empty. Hui's attempts to console her have no effect. During this time, Cong occasionally passes by downstairs, wanting to see Xian, but finds her window dark.
Xian feels miserable, thinking that perhaps her looks are the reason he hasn’t come to find her. Although Meng Yu Nong had previously praised her performance, he still hasn’t shown up. Seeing her daughter upset, Hui tries to comfort her, telling her she is the most beautiful girl in the world. However, when Hui comes to tell Xian it’s time for dinner, she discovers that Xian has developed a fever. Hui rushes out into the rain to find a doctor for her daughter.
Meng Yu Nong tries to leave several times but is stopped by Yao, who insists on tagging along with him. Reluctantly, Meng Yu Nong accompanies Yao to the ballroom, where she dances on stage, but his mind is entirely on Xian.
After taking care of her daughter all night, Hui decides to visit Cong. However, when she sees him busy, she prepares to turn around and leave.
