Episode 31 recap: Zhi Discovers She's Pregnant

In Episode 31, Xian clearly understands the source of the letter, but Aunt Wang interrogates her without any clarification, leaving Xian frustrated. When Xian counters Aunt Wang's accusations, the older woman becomes flustered and even threatens to confiscate Xian's letter. Unwilling to back down, Xian retorts that Aunt Wang is meant to serve the people and has no right to interfere with others' personal belongings. This leaves Aunt Wang speechless, and even after Xian retrieves her letter, Aunt Wang remains stunned.

The letter, sent by Chen Qiao, is filled with concern for Xian and lightly touches on his own situation, warming Xian's heart. Eager to share her joy, she rushes to tell Zhi, who just returned home. However, Zhi seems indifferent, mentioning that she also received a letter from Chen Qiao, which merely asked her to take care of their mother. Xian feels uneasy and, when Zhi isn’t paying attention, secretly glances at her letter. To her dismay, she discovers that Chen Qiao is not doing well either, but his main worry is still for Xian, hoping that Zhi will take good care of her. Overwhelmed with emotion, Xian clutches the letter tightly.

Meanwhile, Zou Jie approaches Zhi to share the news of his upcoming marriage. Although Zhi is saddened, she doesn't blame him; instead, she asks if he ever truly loved her. Zou Jie answers honestly, and after hearing this, Zhi decides to let go, promising not to cling to him any longer.

After getting married, Zou Jie and Wang Jing enjoy a peaceful and warm life together. Wang Jing is hardworking and earns the admiration of Zou’s mother and their neighbors. However, Zhi is suddenly hospitalized due to a high fever. The doctor initially diagnoses her with a fever and prescribes some medication, but Xian feels this is insufficient and insists on further tests. To their shock, the tests reveal that Zhi is pregnant. Xian is stunned, but her predominant feeling is anger, as it has been over six months since Zhi's divorce, making the pregnancy seem suspicious.

Confronted by her mother’s questions, Zhi finally reveals the truth: the child belongs to Zou Jie. It turns out that their breakup was forced by Zou's mother, who pressured him to marry someone else because Zhi could not bear children. Now, this unexpected life complicates everything. Xian recalls her own painful experiences and fears that a similar tragedy may befall Zhi. Determined to talk to Zou Jie, she ultimately chooses silence when she sees him happily with Wang Jing.

As night falls, Xian tosses and turns, recalling her own traumatic abortion experience. She begins to waver, thinking that perhaps terminating this pregnancy would be the best option for Zhi. Quietly, she prepares abortion medication, giving Zhi the choice. However, Zhi cleverly avoids this fate by secretly disposing of the pills and pretending to have a miscarriage to deceive Xian.

Soon after, Zhi receives a letter from Chen Qiao, asking for her help in caring for Tie Dan. Chen Qiao has arrived in Xining, leaving Tie Dan vulnerable and without support. Without hesitation, Zhi agrees to help. When she sees Tie Dan looking emaciated and hungry, her heart aches, and she quickly offers him some steamed buns. However, the situation takes a turn when Tie Dan's brother suddenly appears, forcefully trying to take him away. Zhi, though wanting to help, feels powerless to change the situation.

This series of events strengthens Zhi's resolve: no matter how difficult the road ahead may be, she will persevere for herself and for those who depend on her.
