Episode 13 recap: Luo Yi Ning's Near Fall into the Cliff
In Episode 13, Luo Yi Ning is determined to find the doctor who treated her mother years ago. However, she discovers that the doctor has passed away, and only one of his apprentices is still practicing medicine. Luo Shen Yuan takes Luo Yi Ning to meet this apprentice, who still possesses the doctor's medical notes. These notes detail the conditions and pulse readings of each patient, along with the corresponding prescriptions.
According to the notes, the doctor did indeed prescribe medicine for Luo Yi Ning's mother, but it was just ordinary warming tonics. Over the past few days, Luo Yi Ning has been using this herbal concoction to water her flowers, and to her surprise, the begonia is blooming beautifully and growing sturdier branches. This leads her to believe there must be a deeper connection to her mother, so she encourages Lin Hai Ru to take her along the next time they check the farm's accounts.
At first, Lin Hai Ru is reluctant to meet Qiao Yue Chan, but ultimately, Luo Yi Ning persuades her. Meanwhile, Luo Yi Xiu learns that Luo Yi Ning is planning to visit the farm with Lin Hai Ru. Concerned that his mother might be mistreated, he decides to check on his uncle first. When he finds his uncle working hard, he can't help but complain that ever since Qiao Yue Chan was sent to the farm by Luo Yi Ning, the family’s valuables have been completely looted by Lin Hai Ru, leaving only the monthly allowance.
Resentful, Luo Yi Xiu’s uncle starts plotting against them upon hearing that Luo Yi Ning will be visiting the farm. On the day of their trip, Luo Shen Yuan begs Lin Hai Ru to let him join, and she gladly agrees. Fortunately, he does go along, as someone secretly ties a rope in the woods, startling the horses and causing the carriage to bolt.
Luo Yi Xiu’s uncle has prepared a barrage of stones on the mountain and begins to hurl them down at the sedan chair. Luo Shen Yuan desperately drives the carriage, managing to evade disaster, but they narrowly avoid falling into the cliff. As he struggles to hold the sedan chair steady, Luo Yi Ning and Lin Hai Ru quickly jump out. However, the chair loses balance and is on the verge of tumbling down the cliff. Meanwhile, Luo Shen Yuan is still tangled in the rope from the carriage, threatening to pull him over as well. In a moment of urgency, Luo Yi Ning grabs a knife and cuts the rope, saving Luo Shen Yuan from falling.
Having narrowly escaped death, Luo Yi Ning embraces Luo Shen Yuan tightly. Lin Hai Ru has injured her leg, and with the carriage having plunged into the abyss, Luo Shen Yuan carries Lin Yue Ru back to the fields.
Lin Hai Ru is deeply moved; she had nearly overlooked Luo Shen Yuan's presence, not realizing how emotionally invested he truly was.
Upon returning to the farm, that night, Luo Shen Yuan investigates the horse that died earlier that day and discovers it was poisoned. He also notes that Luo Yi Xiu had gone out and that her uncle was not working, giving them ample opportunity to commit wrongdoing. Luo Yi Ning uses this information as leverage, urging Qiao Yue Chan to reveal the truth about her mother’s death, or she will report Luo Yi Xiu and her uncle to their father.
Qiao Yue Chan denies any wrongdoing, explaining that after she realized Luo Yi Ning's mother was utterly despairing of Luo Cheng Zhang, she refrained from committing any heinous acts. Moreover, she claims that Luo Cheng Zhang is inherently cold-hearted, and he kept Luo Yi Ning in the main position primarily for her mother’s dowry, which he intended to use to secure a government position.
Qiao Yue Chan swears on the luck of her daughter and son, and Luo Yi Ning believes she might be telling the truth. This leads her to wonder who else could have harmed her mother, and there seems to be no one but Luo Cheng Zhang to suspect. The next day, Luo Shen Yuan brings Luo Yi Ning news that he had his men inquire with Luo Yi Xiu’s uncle, confirming that the stones and the rope were indeed prepared by him, but there was no poison given to the horses.
This indicates that there was a third party involved in the scheme. Who could it be? Until there is solid evidence, Luo Shen Yuan advises Luo Yi Ning not to jump to conclusions. Lin Hai Ru initially wants her brother to stay with the Luo family to focus on his studies and pursue a degree, but Lin Mao is not interested in that path. He prefers experimenting with medicinal recipes and creating small inventions related to perfumes and cosmetics.
The maids in the household frequently buy the newly made scented soaps from him, and just then, Lin Hai Ru arrives. She scolds her brother for not concentrating on his studies, leaving Lin Mao feeling aggrieved.
