Episode 10 recap: Duan Xian Feng's Night Descent to Find Gao Feng Liang

In Episode 10, Shuang Xi spots a photo of a little girl named Miaosheng and starts to wonder if Duan Xian Feng has started a family. Duan Xian Feng smiles and explains that Miaosheng is his adopted daughter. Years ago, the UN troops accidentally killed Miaosheng’s older sister in Beiping, leaving her without anyone to care for her.

Feeling sympathy for the girl, Duan Xian Feng takes her to the Americans to seek compensation, but they only offer thirty-six dollars, which frustrates him. This incident plants a seed in his mind: to ensure national dignity and pride, they must rely on strength and determination.

Meanwhile, the battle at Shangganling is fierce. Qin Ji Wei observes that only a handful of soldiers, including Cui Jiangong and the political commissar, are holding the line. The troops are starving, and even the cooks are eager to fight. At this moment, General Deng Hua contacts Wang Jin Shan, announcing that the orders from the volunteer forces have arrived, and Li De Sheng is bringing the Twelfth Army for reinforcements.

Qin Ji Wei feels a mix of emotions and contemplates how to proceed. He gathers the soldiers in the tunnel to discuss a counterattack on the 23rd, sending Ding Xin to scout enemy positions. He believes that resilience is key; those who can endure will ultimately prevail.

On the American side, General Van Fleet is furious, watching the front lines descend into chaos with heavy casualties. He berates his subordinates, noting that the volunteer soldiers only earn three dollars a month yet fight fearlessly and united. He warns that if they continue to fail, there will be consequences.

At the tunnel entrance, Shuang Xi and the others engage in a game of cat and mouse with the enemy until they fall silent. Taking advantage of the darkness, Duan Xian Feng quietly descends to speak with Gao Feng Liang about artillery support. Initially reluctant, Gao Feng Liang is intrigued when Duan Xian Feng translates and explains the American military manual. As they talk, they discover they share a mutual understanding and respect.

In the camp of the American 31st Regiment, new life is welcomed, but the commanding officer reminds them not to forget the ongoing battle, insisting they must drive the Chinese soldiers from their caves that night. Meanwhile, on Wusheng Mountain, the observation post urgently sends reinforcements to Jutingxian. Du Wen Jin volunteers; although she is the daughter of a candy mogul and often seen as a pampered heiress, Liu Xiang Yang knows her parents were heroes who sacrificed for the country.

That night, the soldiers in the tunnel find joy amid suffering, even befriending a little squirrel, their laughter masking their resilience. After hearing Ding Xin's report, Duan Xian Feng feels heavy-hearted. Only twenty-six soldiers are still able to fight, and their grenades are running low. Even with Ding Xin’s troops, they face overwhelming odds.

Ding Xin, frustrated, accuses Duan Xian Feng of being weak, leading to an argument between them. At this critical moment, the observation post reports that the Americans are rapidly fortifying their positions. Duan Xian Feng immediately writes a report to Qin Ji Wei, but Hu Man Cang reminds him that orders are paramount, and submitting the report won’t change the overall situation.

Before he can finish, another round of American artillery strikes hits, injuring several soldiers at the cave entrance. Duan Xian Feng decisively orders the entrance to be collapsed and a backup route to be used. However, just then, Luo Wanxiang is severely injured by an explosion, and with medical supplies running low, his condition becomes critical, raising everyone's anxiety.
