Episode 6 recap: Duan Xian Feng and Hu Man Cang Ascend the Mountain for Reinforcements
In Episode 6, General Qin Ji Wei personally pours wine for Duan Xian Feng and the others who are about to head into battle. Duan Xian Feng insists on going to the front lines, fully aware that a soldier’s honor and dignity are tested on the battlefield. He also understands that if he remains in the rear, it is because the future of the Chinese army extends beyond the immediate fight, focusing on broader peace-building efforts.
However, winning this battle is essential for laying a solid foundation for the new China. Therefore, Qin Ji Wei and everyone raise their glasses in deep respect for the country.
At the front lines of the U.S. military, Associated Press war correspondent Ryan captures many heart-wrenching moments. Just when it seemed the war was nearing its end, the flames of conflict are reignited.
Hans, a staff officer from the 31st Regiment of the 7th Division, emotionally snatches Ryan’s camera, believing that the bravery of the soldiers should be showcased rather than their sacrifices, despite the reluctant nature of his decision. Division Commander Smith is furious about the enormous losses in battle and vows not to let Triangle Mountain (597.9 Heights) become a stronghold for the Chinese army again.
After careful consideration, Qin Ji Wei appoints Duan Xian Feng as the deputy commander of the 8th Company, tasking him and Hu Man Cang with leading a reserve unit up the mountain to provide reinforcements. He also assigns Shuang Xi to stay with the 8th Company after conveying messages to the 45th Division. Shuang Xi is overjoyed—not only does he decide to stay, but he also brings much-needed Molotov cocktails, which are undoubtedly a timely boost for Duan Xian Feng.
As the counteroffensive rages on, Duan Xian Feng hesitates to issue the attack order, leaving Hu Man Cang anxious. Duan Xian Feng patiently explains that the enemy's artillery bombardment of the heights is fierce; although the mountain is solid, it cannot withstand heavy shelling. Additionally, with the supply lines cut, any rash action would only lead to more casualties. They decide to rely on grenades for close-quarter combat.
Just as the 8th Company is preparing to act, they notice a sudden decrease in enemy fire, which is actually a trap intended to lure them in. In a rush to inform the others, Shuang Xi is caught in an artillery strike but manages to evade it in time. Duan Xian Feng and Hu Man Cang lead their team to catch up with the forward unit, finding them heavily damaged but thankfully without any fatalities, thanks to Shuang Xi’s timely warning. Although Hu Man Cang is displeased with Shuang Xi’s independent actions, he understands the loyalty behind them and urges him to return to the ranks quickly.
On the night of October 18, 1952, Duan Xian Feng quietly leads the 8th Company toward the 597.9 Heights, only to discover that the entrance to the tunnel has been severely compromised. He quickly adjusts the strategy and leads the team into Tunnel No. 1.
As they navigate through the artillery barrage, Duan Xian Feng’s leadership skills impress Hu Man Cang. Upon entering the tunnel, Hu Man Cang realizes that the bugler, La Ba, is missing and immediately organizes a search. Meanwhile, a U.S. patrol team detects something unusual, prompting the 8th Company soldiers to disperse and hide quickly. La Ba, however, blows the bugle to draw the enemy's attention.
Inside the tunnel, Duan Xian Feng and his team encounter the remaining twenty or so wounded soldiers, who, despite their serious injuries, display unwavering resolve. Feng Bai Sheng, anxiously waiting in another tunnel, receives a call from Duan Xian Feng and decides to let the 8th Company rest in Tunnel No. 1 to prepare for the impending major counterattack.
As Hu Man Cang evades the U.S. search, he finally finds the injured La Ba. Their reunion amidst the chaos further solidifies their belief in victory.
