As Long As We Are Together: A Heartwarming and Inspiring Drama
"As Long As We Are Together" has received continuous praise and is known for its sunny and heartwarming storyline. However, as the drama progresses, it inevitably faces exaggerated and forced emotional moments. Directed by renowned filmmaker Wang Jun, "As Long As We Are Together" gained widespread acclaim upon its release, thanks to its compelling theme, strong cast, and excellent performances.
The plot of "As Long As We Are Together" is both heartwarming and inspiring. The drama revolves around the lives of three married couples, with the main characters Ye Yi Fan and He Jia Ru facing a series of amusing and heartwarming incidents as they navigate through the challenges of having a second child and finding a new home.
The story delves into various aspects of married life, workplace dynamics, and the boundaries of relationships outside of marriage. In Ye Yi Fan and He Jia Ru's story, their core issue revolves around their child. From the urgent need for their son to start school, the unexpected arrival of a second child, to the challenges of caring for aging parents, these events accumulate and prompt them to find an affordable and quality new home.
However, just before they can finalize the purchase of their new home, Ye Yi Fan's father suffers a stroke and they are forced to abandon their plans and use the funds for his medical treatment.
The process of buying a house takes unexpected turns and ends up being unsuccessful, leaving their dream home as a distant hope. Fortunately, He Jia Ru's company offers them assistance. Their supportive boss promises that if He Jia Ru's documentary can successfully start production, they will be able to purchase a new house at an internal price. This reignites their hope, but challenges continue to arise.
After securing the investment, He Jia Ru travels to Xishuangbanna to shoot the documentary. However, her hard work goes up in flames as a fire destroys all her footage. Ye Yi Fan is left in disbelief and is determined to uncover the truth behind the incident. Chaos ensues in Ye Yi Fan's family, and his close friend Chen Li also faces unrest in his life.
Chen Li and his wife Hou Yuan Yuan have been unable to obtain local residency despite living and working in Pingcheng for over a decade. Their marriage is a stark contrast, with Chen Li being a gentle and humble person while Hou Yuan Yuan has a fiery and assertive personality. The four-year separation takes a toll on their relationship, leading to a significant change in Hou Yuan Yuan's mindset. Her suspicions grow as she is no longer physically present, and she installs two cameras in their home to monitor her husband's activities.
However, unbeknownst to her, Chen Li is aware of her actions but chooses to pretend otherwise to avoid further conflict. Their situation takes a major turn when Feng Dan enters their lives, forcing the couple to make a crucial decision.
Apart from these two contrasting couples, another couple, Tian Tian and Tian Dong, also face significant challenges and hardships. Tian Tian, He Jia Ru's best friend, is straightforward and down-to-earth. Unlike He Jia Ru, she used to live a luxurious life due to her looks and wealth. However, in middle age, she encounters both emotional and financial crises. A "cure internet addiction" event causes her to lose everything and fall into poverty.
It is revealed that Tian Dong's company has collapsed, and their house has been auctioned off. The extravagance of the past becomes a stark contrast to their current financial struggles, leading Tian Tian to propose a divorce for the sake of their child.
But Tian Dong seems unwilling to face the harsh reality and retreats to seclusion in the mountains, hoping to forget the past. The future of their relationship remains uncertain. Is Tian Dong truly bankrupt, or is he testing Tian Tian's commitment?
The three couples all have upcoming issues to face, and the story is exciting, with the actors delivering excellent performances. But why did it start strong and then fizzle out? I believe there are three main reasons. Firstly, there were deliberate plot twists, such as Ye Yi Fan's inexplicable departure and unexpected injury, designed solely to create difficulties in buying a house.
Secondly, there were inexplicable romantic subplots. It seems that many screenwriters believe that without affairs, domestic violence, or domineering CEOs, there can be no emotional drama. Domestic violence and domineering CEOs are present everywhere.
A man and a woman who barely know each other fall in love at first sight and pursue each other relentlessly. It feels too contrived. And when Feng Dan was abused by her husband, instead of seeking help from relevant organizations, she goes to the home of a single man with whom she has minimal contact. Does that make sense?
Thirdly, there are forced emotional scenes and the portrayal of idealized characters. The good characters are so good that they are simply not believable. For example, He Jia Ru and her female boss, one is narrow-minded and petty, while the other is selfless and magnanimous like a little white rabbit.
Come on, how did He Jia Ru even reach a managerial position in the workplace? Regarding the workplace aspect, I have to mention "News Queen." It's not to say that the workplace should be exactly the same, but it falls short in comparison.
However, overall, "As Long As We Are Together" can be considered a production with high production value and thought-provoking content. Throughout the viewing experience, it allows the audience to feel the warmth and power of life in the storyline. If these minor flaws can be eliminated, it will undoubtedly become a classic.
