The Unfulfilled 'As Long As We Are Together' Reveals the Sad Reality of Life
The drama "As Long As We Are Together" once again truthfully portrays the bleak aspects of life. Whether you are a man or a woman, young or old, facing the immense pressure of housing, dealing with the chaos between spouses, or contending with the excessive demands of children, nothing compares to the destructive power of parents and older siblings joining forces to handle their offspring.
Even if you are an only child and treat your parents well on a regular basis, when faced with the sudden irrationality of the elderly and children, an insurmountable barrier can arise between you.
It's strange but not unexpected that the farther the distance between you and your parents, the less frequent these sudden conflicts occur. However, when you live together with your parents, the intensity of such conflicts becomes more pronounced.
Compared to the recently aired domineering CEO drama "XXX", where misunderstandings and mistakes mostly stem from the female protagonist's best friend, it is merely the ups and downs of a romantic relationship. But when it comes to older siblings supporting each other to deal with their children, it directly affects the blood ties and leaves a lasting impact.
As the father of Ye Yi Fan, he moved from his hometown in Northeast China to live with his son and daughter-in-law a long time ago. Setting aside the traditional notion of raising children for old age, this family structure has almost all advantages and no disadvantages.
As a retired father, despite leaving his hometown for an unfamiliar city, he gained the affectionate bond of living with his biological son.
At the same time, he can enjoy the joy of doting on grandchildren while managing household chores. Although this view may not be widely accepted, for someone like me, a middle-aged person in their forties, it may be an ideal way to spend their later years.
Even if the son lacks career abilities and is constantly concerned about his father's savings, it cannot deny the fact that the daughter-in-law is more filial to her father-in-law.
Having said that, some may sneer at my thoughts and perception, considering them as outdated and conservative. However, in the face of the reality influenced by Confucianism since childhood, isn't this the life and purpose we should adhere to and enjoy? If we don't recognize this way of life and life plan, then what are we working so hard for houses and children after marriage? What have we learned?
Perhaps influenced by the social environment, both young and old are gradually accepting and spreading the idea of setting boundaries with their children.
Even when older siblings exchange information and offer advice, they adopt a mode of strategizing. When He Jia Ru mistakenly believes she is pregnant with her second child and overhears her son plotting to use her retirement funds, Ye Yi Fan's father chooses to join a shopping tour with his older brother, indirectly leading to the older brother's partial paralysis.
If it weren't for evading debt from their children, if the two older brothers hadn't consumed five bottles of liquor the previous night, if there hadn't been a drunken incident involving the son, how could the tour group have seized the opportunity to abandon them? Despite the disastrous outcome of the previous incident, Ye Yi Fan's father doesn't seem to have learned his lesson. Under the instigation and encouragement of another older brother, he embarks on another regretful escapade.
Compared to the ill-advised actions of a best friend that breaks up a young couple, the older brothers' theoretical discussions can be likened to Ma Su's defeat at the Battle of Jieting.
Facing a father who is petty and overly concerned about gains and losses, Ye Yi Fan, as a son, believed that everything would be fine after having a heartfelt conversation. However, when his father's older brother heard about it, he believed that Ye Yi Fan's father had lost to his son and daughter-in-law. It's possible that he may no longer hold his head high in front of them. Consequently, he initiates another plan to leave, disregarding what his son and daughter-in-law face every day.
He wants to assert control in family life. He wants to take the initiative in front of his son and daughter-in-law.
Even if he sleeps in a small bedroom with his grandson, even if the family of four lives in a cramped two-bedroom apartment, even if they face the inconveniences that arise after the grandson starts elementary school.
The son and daughter-in-law, who have a rough way of dealing with people, have no idea what the father is thinking in his heart. The son and daughter-in-law, who are exhausted from the daily struggles of life, have no time to think about what the father wants.
Compared to blood relatives who only meet once in the morning and evening, it is the older brothers and sisters who live in the same community who truly understand Ye Yi Fan's father, the widower.
Without knowing the situation of Ye Yi Fan's father's son and daughter-in-law, they only stand in Ye Yi Fan's father's shoes and offer advice. They use their own real-life situations, as well as the scenes they imagine and construct in their minds, to devise plans and strategies for Ye Yi Fan's father to gain control in the household.
Because no matter how they incite Ye Yi Fan's father, they will not be the ones to bear the consequences of their rash words. If Ye Yi Fan's father and his children turn against each other because of their influence, then they will be the first-hand source of gossip and become the insiders.
In the eyes of the older brothers and sisters, the principle of "do not do unto others what you would not have them do unto you" has long been forgotten. In their hearts, as long as Ye Yi Fan's father can gain the upper hand over his son and daughter-in-law in the household, as long as it does not involve their own problems, they can freely speak irresponsible words.
It cannot be denied that with the advice and help of the older brothers, Ye Yi Fan's father indeed achieved an initial victory. He not only obtained his own bankbook from his daughter-in-law but also immediately went to the bank to change the password. After tasting the sweetness of this initial victory, Ye Yi Fan's father trusted and obeyed the older brothers even more, and he embarked on a second campaign to regain control. However, in the end, Ye Yi Fan's father reaped the bitter fruit of trusting the older brothers. He not only carried out a real plan but also pushed himself down the stairs.
How unfortunate, how sorrowful. A small family that should have been happy and harmonious, a small family that should have worked together to improve their living conditions, was destroyed by Ye Yi Fan's father's older brothers. Not to mention whether Ye Yi Fan's father will suffer permanent physical injuries as a result, the most important thing is that he seems to have injured his head.
Such a direct and forceful injury, even if it is an elderly person with a fragile body, cannot be underestimated, let alone a young man in his prime.
Although we don't know the subsequent developments, based on the brutal realistic style of "As Long As We Are Together," it can be said that the outcome resulting from the older brothers' thoughtless words is likely to directly destroy a small family that many people would envy.
Compared to the catastrophic consequences caused by the best friend in "XXX" or the paper strategy of Ma Su in "Three XXX," when a group of talkative and scheming older brothers and sisters come together, their destructive power is unmatched by any best friend or military strategist. This destructive power not only wreaks havoc but also may be irreparable and irreversible. However, Ye Yi Fan's father, who is caught in the midst of it, will never see through or understand.
This is the interpretation of "As Long As We Are Together" for now. Stay tuned for more exciting analysis next time.
