Rising Stars and a New Fantasy Drama: A Review of the Chinese TV Series Market in 2023
In this year's TV and film market, the '95 Flowers' have collectively shone brightly. Zhang Jingyi, with her captivating and story-filled face, quickly dominated the current idol drama market and has now ventured into the big screen. Zhou, with his extraordinary looks, has achieved decent ratings in the two period dramas he starred in this year. Guan Xiaotong, known as the "Nation's Sweetheart," has established her reputation and is now taking on various period dramas, gradually becoming a prominent actress in the industry.
Tian Xiwei, with her sweet and adorable appearance, has secured her place in the ancient puppetry field with two light-hearted comedies. The upcoming dramas for next year also raise anticipation. Additionally, there's He Landou, who recently played important supporting roles in two popular period dramas. Despite average looks and limited screen time, she showcases impressive acting skills and demonstrates potential as a versatile actress.
Zhao Lusi, as a leading figure among the '95 Flowers,' has already appeared in two dramas this year, and her third drama has been scheduled to premiere. I watched all four episodes of "The Last Immortal" at double speed overnight and found that this drama has quite a few flaws! The plot is cliché and boring, and the male lead's character is not likable.
The plot adopts a reverse chronological narrative. At the beginning of the story, the female lead, Ayin (played by Zhao Lusi), returns from a calamity in the mortal world, astonishingly ending her current life. This is revealed through a conversation between the two lead characters.
Ayin has lost all her previous memories and is reincarnating in the mortal world multiple times to escape her misfortune. However, each incarnation ends in tragedy. Feng Yin happens to witness this and secretly saves the male lead, only revealing a hand and sleeve while casting the spell. Due to Feng Yin's appearance resembling the Peacock Clan princess, Hua Shu (played by Yan Yuan Cao Fei Ran), she is mistaken for the princess.
As a result, the male lead, Gu Jin, without suspecting anything, directly goes to thank Hua Shu. This mistaken identity plot is strikingly similar to the previous fantasy drama "Fragrant Ashes." Moreover, the female lead is a phoenix, and the second female lead is a peacock, which is exactly the same character setup as the drama "Flower Warrior." Wow, aren't there many species in the heavenly realm? They keep using the same few animals!
One can only say that the screenwriters of current fantasy dramas have it easy. They combine character setups and plots from different sources to create a seemingly new script without considering the problem of excessive similarities. Aren't they afraid of confusing the audience? Apart from the cliché plot, the character of the male lead is also very annoying! In most fantasy dramas, the male lead's biggest weakness is valuing the well-being of the world over the female lead. However, the male lead's character in this drama is both foolish and arrogant!
The male lead mistakenly believes that Hua Shu, the peacock princess, is his savior and vows to fulfill her wish. Hua Shu expresses her desire to see the Fire Phoenix Jade, knowing it is extremely precious. Despite this, the male lead agrees to help Hua Shu obtain it. Due to the male lead's sudden interference, all of Feng Yin's celestial energy is absorbed by the Fire Phoenix Jade, resulting in a failed rebirth and preventing Feng Yin's reincarnation.
The male lead is supposed to be over 200 years old and a true god's son, yet his intelligence feels inferior to that of a child! After a series of twists and turns, a part of Feng Yin's celestial energy enters the egg of the Water Condensing Beast and transforms into a human form. The two form a master-servant contract, and Donghua Shenjun instructs them to find the scattered fragments of Feng Yin's celestial energy. Once they are all gathered, the contract will be dissolved, and Donghua Shenjun entrusts Gu Jin with his most powerful artifact to protect them.
Furthermore, the male lead doesn't inquire about the reasons behind the conflicts and immediately takes Hua Shu's side. It should be noted that the reason why the Eagle Clan Princess is pursuing Hua Shu is that Hua Shu stole their sacred object. However, the male lead blindly favors Hua Shu without understanding the circumstances, leading the Eagle Clan to mistakenly believe that the Daze Mountain lineage and Hua Shu are allies.
The character development of the male lead is truly mindless! Later, Hua Shu distorts the truth, deliberately acting pitiful in front of the male lead. The male lead, in his righteousness, lends his master's artifact, the Heaven-covering Umbrella, to Hua Shu, indirectly causingthe downfall of the Daze Mountain lineage. This entire plotline feels forced and lacks depth.
On the positive side, Zhao Lusi's portrayal of the female lead, Ayin, is commendable. She successfully brings out the vulnerability and determination of her character, despite the weak script. Her acting skills elevate the drama and make it somewhat watchable.
The production value of "The Last Immortal" is decent, with visually appealing costumes and set designs. The special effects are also well-executed, especially during the scenes involving magical powers and transformations. However, these technical aspects alone cannot compensate for the shortcomings in the plot and character development.
In conclusion, "The Last Immortal" falls short of expectations. The cliché plot, unlikable male lead, and recycled character setups make it a forgettable fantasy drama in the current TV series market. Despite Zhao Lusi's strong performance, it is not enough to salvage the overall quality of the show. As a viewer, I hope to see more original and engaging content in the future that breaks away from the repetitive patterns seen in recent fantasy dramas.
Let's put it this way, does the male lead have no idea about his own abilities? Neither he nor the female lead have much power, yet they have to complete difficult tasks, and he readily lends out the artifact? And the female lead reincarnates as the Water Condensing Beast, which has healing abilities. But after healing others, the beast's own lifespan will shorten. So, the life of the second female lead is important, but the female lead's life is expendable, right? The male lead's character is brainless, foolish, and reckless. It's really frustrating to watch! And the three-headed dragon, a divine beast in the drama, is very stiff and lacks presence. It feels like the effects in some online games are better.
Moreover, from many of Zhao Lusi's works, it can be seen that her acting skills follow a similar pattern and lack freshness. Either she acts cute or mischievous. After watching too many, it feels like Zhao Lusi's acting skills are limited to a few tricks. Except for the positive reception of "Sparkling Galaxy," Zhao Lusi's other roles have not been very memorable.
Currently, Zhao Lusi's team should carefully select scripts and focus on quality rather than quantity. They should also hire acting coaches and provide guidance to enhance Zhao Lusi's acting skills and broaden her range. That's the key to truly elevate Zhao Lusi to the top tier! Instead of constantly consuming her fame and making her take on numerous projects. Once she reaches the top tier, actors not only have more choices in scripts but also have a say in selecting their co-stars. That's the significance of reaching the top tier!
To summarize, if we consider a rating of 10 as the highest, this drama can only be given around a 5. The plot lacks originality, the storyline is cliché, the characters' appearance is not sufficient, and the special effects are subpar. After watching it, there isn't even a single impressive aspect that leaves a lasting impression.
It can only be said that the plot is the crucial element of a drama, and we hope that future fantasy dramas will bring some freshness to the audience!
