As a sequel to the renowned "Eternal Jade Dust" and the first fantasy drama starring Zhao Lu Si, "The Last Immortal" has captured the attention of numerous viewers. After its premiere, "The Last Immortal" soared to the top of the popularity charts, surpassing even Liu Shishi's "Thoughts of Mountains and Rivers." The plot revolves around a protagonist who loses his divine powers and becomes a humble disciple in the Great Marsh Mountain. The female lead, Feng Yin, tragically perishes during the Nirvana ceremony while attempting to retrieve the Fire Phoenix Jade without permission.
The subsequent storyline follows their encounters with Prince Hong Yi, the nephew of the Fox King, and Princess Yan Shuang of the Eagle Tribe as they embark on a journey of battling monsters and leveling up. However, the characterization of the male lead has left the audience disappointed. At the beginning of the plot, it is Feng Yin who secretly helps the male lead in a righteous act. However, due to leaving behind only a red dress hem, the male lead mistakenly believes that Princess Hua Shu, the Peacock Princess, saved him. The audience grew tired of the plot where the male lead becomes infatuated with his savior based solely on one act of kindness. Is love really that fickle? Doesn't he realize the importance of the Fire Phoenix's Nirvana?
Knowing the significance, he still insists on pursuing the item, displaying arrogance in his abilities. The subsequent actions of the male lead have further distanced him from the viewers. He expresses immense gratitude towards the person who saved him and reveals all his hidden treasures to ensure their safety. However, the male lead's flawed reasoning insists on helping his goddess, frustrating the audience. Witnessing Gu Jing's performance, the audience couldn't help but exclaim, "We were wrong to blame the Queen Mother in the past; immortals should not engage in romance!" However, the concept of accepting the "dual weaknesses" implies that while one's current capabilities may be lacking, they should still possess enough competence to avoid defeat. Creating a character that embodies both "strength" and "tragic circumstances" should encompass physical and mental aspects.
Unfortunately, many film and television works tend to emphasize a character's strength, but when attacked, they inexplicably cough up blood, undermining the credibility of the "beautiful but tragic" character design. Apart from the male lead's characterization, the audience is also concerned about the subsequent plot. The male lead imposes the Heavenly Thunder Penalty on the female lead, but the Peacock Princess beats him to it, resulting in the female lead's soul dispersing even before the male lead carries out the punishment, initiating a cycle of trials and tribulations.
Moreover, in "The Last Immortal," the so-called torment of the male lead still revolves around inflicting pain on the female lead, causing anguish for the male lead. While there are positive reviews, the majority of criticism is directed at the female lead, Zhao Lu Si. In "The Last Immortal," Zhao Lu Si portrays both Feng Yin and her transformed self, the Water Nymph Ah Yin. She insists on competing fairly for the position of the Phoenix Empress, defying the notion of bloodline superiority, which pleasantly surprises the audience. Ah Yin's behavior after transforming into the Water Nymph is reasonable, and she outshines the male lead in many ways. After discovering she has no family, she experiences sadness but quickly regains her composure and prepares for the breeding of Water Nymphs.
Prior to its premiere, Zhao Lu Si's high-pitched voice in the trailer triggered annoyance among many viewers. The second male lead, Prince Hong Yi of the Fox Clan, portrayed by Yan Yuan Li Yun Rui, also boasts a remarkable character design. From the start, Hong Yi believes that immortals are not superior to demons and has always strived for the revival of the demon clan.
In conclusion, "The Last Immortal" has just premiered, and the plot is yet to fully develop, resulting in relatively one-dimensional character portrayals. Although "The Last Immortal" is currently generating online popularity, its reputation is not favorable. Ultimately, it is the solid storyline that captivates the audience, and we hope "The Last Immortal" can break free from the constraints of traditional fantasy dramas and introduce new developments!
