Unshakable Faith: A Thrilling Drama of Espionage and Dedication in 1950s Hong Kong
The TV series "Unshakable Faith" tells the story of Ji Danyang, a student studying overseas who returns to China in the late 1950s to engage in defense research. After arriving in Hong Kong, he falls into an enemy trap. Public security officer Pang Hongmei protects Ji Danyang and ensures his safe return to the motherland. However, even after the enemy's failure in Hong Kong, they continue to target the "Water Drop Project" located in Lumen with the deployment of the "Panshi Plan," led by the spy known as "Snow Wolf." Their objective is to disrupt our research mission.
To ensure the smooth progress of the Water Drop Project, public security personnel led by Pang Hongmei engage in a life-and-death struggle with the enemy in Lumen. After enduring life-and-death trials, they successfully uphold their faith and fulfill their revolutionary dreams. I almost burst out laughing at this point. It is well known that Hong Kong was a British colony at that time, and international flights (including ships and airplanes) would certainly have broadcast in Cantonese first, then English.
Even after Hong Kong's return, Mandarin was not widely used. Fortunately, the recent Cathay Pacific incident prompted the special administrative region to promote Mandarin, and flight announcements began to be made in Mandarin. The writers and directors are truly living in the present, ignorant of the history more than sixty years ago, as evident from the costumes. Pang Hongmei, played by Peng Xiaoran, looks decent with exquisite makeup while performing her tasks in Hong Kong, but when she returns to China, she wears short sleeves and tight-fitting pants, which accentuate her beautiful figure.
However, her peculiar attire at the time would have likely resulted in her being reported as a female spy or even considered mentally ill. Nevertheless, "Unshakable Faith" has a tightly woven plot, intense fight scenes, and the support of veteran actor Ding Yongdai. In the current sea of mindless fantasy dramas and naive workplace elite dramas, it provides a refreshing change of taste and is worth watching.
