Unshakable Faith: A Spy Drama with Soaring Viewership and Historical Inaccuracies
The spy drama "Unshakable Faith" has seen a remarkable surge in viewership! Set in the 1950s and 1960s, the actors' makeup and costumes completely lack a sense of the era. Most absurd of all, Peng Xiao Ran's portrayal of police officer Pang Hong Mei features tight-fitting clothes that deliberately highlight her seductive figure.
However, in a spy drama set in the 1950s and 1960s, such scenes, makeup, physique, and identity feel completely out of place and fail to provide an authentic experience. Even the male lead, a supposed expert in espionage, lacks the appearance of an expert. He acts recklessly, lacking any sense of security and responsibility, and instead of dedicating himself to defense research, he constantly exposes himself to danger.
One is a police officer, the other is a mathematics expert, and yet in a small town during the 1950s and 1960s, they frequently argue and even get angry at each other, giving the impression of quarreling lovers. The overly melodramatic character design makes the characters in this series feel insincere. From the makeup to the character design and acting, everything feels detached from the era and the characters' respective identities, making it difficult for the audience to develop any fondness and instead leaving them feeling frustrated.
Furthermore, the plot is riddled with loopholes. From the very beginning, it is established how crucial Ji Dan Yang, the mathematics expert, is. However, after being rescued by Pang Hong Mei in the first episode, his importance is not convincingly portrayed. Although it is mentioned that there are people protecting him in secret, working in coordination with Pang Hong Mei, this is never shown throughout the series.
Pang Hong Mei, a simple-minded police officer, despite some contemplation, consistently lacks thorough consideration. She goes shopping with the expert multiple times, each time leaving him behind. If it weren't for the expert's luck, he would have been captured or assassinated by enemy agents long ago. Pang Hong Mei consistently prioritizes her own interests without considering the consequences, and someone with such behavior cannot adequately protect the expert.
As a mathematics expert, he should be fully protected and not allow any information to leak. However, the story is designed in a way that Pang Hong Mei is the sole protector and can freely move around, even going as far as participating in a water rescue mission later on. Every time danger arises, he is present at the scene and involved in the case, which not only exposes his identity to everyone but also reveals the shortcomings of the police officer's abilities.
Most dangerously, he puts himself in harm's way. For example, during the market visit, Pang Hong Mei once again leaves the expert behind. Although Bai Hui, the nurse, takes care of him this time, the expert still goes after the enemy agents, resulting in Pang Hong Mei getting injured, the expert nearly losing his life, and the enemy agents escaping.
Through this series of plot developments, it becomes clear that the drama aims to create a spy duo consisting of the mathematics expert and Pang Hong Mei, with one representing intellect and the other physical prowess in their fight against enemy agents. However, it is evident that such character design cannot hold up and does not align with reality, resulting in numerous plot holes. High viewership does not automatically make a show excellent or indicate audience approval.
"Unshakable Faith" once again provides a lesson for spy dramas, emphasizing the importance of respecting history and the audience. Only by approaching the craft with reverence, continuously striving for excellence, and eliminating flaws can an outstanding spy drama be crafted.
