The Hope: A Refreshing Twist on School Romantic Comedy

If you haven't caught up with "The Hope," a light-hearted campus comedy, you've been missing out. This series was heavily criticized when it first aired, with negative reviews even before its release. Some people considered the storyline clichéd, thinking it was just another story about a rebellious teacher educating underachieving students, leading to a dramatic turnaround in education. Others compared it to "Days of Glory," suggesting it might even be a remake of "Dragon Sakura." The opinions were divided.

However, "The Hope" may seem like a familiar story, but it offers a unique perspective. The entire plot revolves around a private high school called Minglong Experimental High School, specifically focusing on Class 11 in Grade 12. The class teacher, Lei Ming, is not only an exceptional English teacher but also an individual with his own educational philosophy and methods.

Lei Ming handpicks a group of troubled students from other classes to form this small-sized class. His goal is to awaken their dreams and help them succeed in their desired universities, particularly the challenging Qingbei University. To achieve this, Lei Ming not only imparts knowledge but also guides them in developing good study habits, facing challenges, repairing family relationships, and fostering a positive mindset.

Sang Xia, a psychological counselor and the homeroom teacher of Class 11, is Lei Ming's capable assistant. Although she appears lazy most of the time, she provides crucial psychological support and advice to students in critical moments, drawing from her professional knowledge and experience. Instead of uncreative imitation of "Days of Glory" or "Dragon Sakura," this series incorporates its own innovations and unique elements while incorporating the essence of these works.

By setting the story in a private high school rather than a traditional public school, the series reflects the current educational landscape more realistically and allows greater creative freedom. It also portrays dilapidated houses where nobody lives as a symbol of impoverished households. Li Ran, despite his unfortunate circumstances, is a physics prodigy, and Lei Ming notices this talent, which leads him to invite Li Ran to join Class 11.

For Li Ran, who can barely afford a school uniform, joining this class means his tuition is fully covered. He sees it as a blessing, as he hopes that under Lei Ming's guidance, he will successfully pass the entrance exam for Qingbei University. Cheng Yu Shan's experiences are comparable to Li Ran's. Her mother is occupied with managing the entire household, and Cheng Yu Shan has to take care of her stepfather and younger brother, all while suppressing her own feelings.

One day, she discovers that her stepfather has installed a camera in her room. Unable to bear it any longer, she chooses to escape from this dreadful place and joins Class 11. Surprisingly, even such a seemingly perfect character contemplates suicide. When Li Ran and the others have nowhere else to go, they seek refuge in Shen Yao's home. Living with them proves to be inconvenient, and when Li Ran urgently needs to use the bathroom, he searches for it and unexpectedly finds Shen Yao standing naked in front of him.

In her panic, Shen Yao throws the items on her table into the trash can and reproaches Li Ran for not understanding the courtesy of knocking. It is only after he leaves that she realizes her wrist is bleeding. This incident reveals the severity of Shen Yao's psychological issues, as she has long lost attachment to the world. Nonetheless, she eventually joins Class 11 and, with the help of Sang Xia's psychological counseling, overcomes her suicidal thoughts, leading to her successful admission to Qingbei University.

Of course, not all students achieve a remarkable turnaround. Jiang Qing Lang and Bian Xiao Xiao face more challenging circumstances. Although Jiang Qing Lang's family is not as wealthy as Shen Yao's, they are relatively well-off. His parents worry about him and constantly prepare delicious meals for him. They even hire tutors, but he remains underachieving. However, both Jiang Qing Lang and Bian Xiao Xiao experience personal growth within Class 11.
