Unshakable Faith: A Glimpse into the Characters and Performances

When I was young, I particularly enjoyed watching spy movies like "Hidden Whistle in Sheep City" from the 1950s and "Secret Blueprint" from the 1960s. They are classics in my memory. My father had well-defined facial features, deep eyes, a prominent nose, and looked like a foreigner. My mother, on the other hand, was dignified and beautiful. Peng Xiao Ran, under the careful cultivation of her parents, graduated from the Broadcasting Department of the Central Media University.

Her first job after graduating from college was as the host of the web program "iQiyi Morning Flight." After her relationship was exposed, it sparked heated discussions among netizens. After all, Qiu Xinzhi was 23 years older than her, and their relationship was jokingly referred to as a "father-daughter romance" by netizens. Three years later, Qiu Xinzhi took the initiative to publicly announce his relationship with Jian Ren Zi on social media. However, netizens have always been skeptical about this relationship.

Jian Ren Zi, who plays the male lead Liu Xue Yi in the drama, was born on July 6, 1990, in an ordinary working-class family in Qingdao. Since childhood, he was sent by his parents to study dance. Because of his outstanding appearance and the emergence of a famous celebrity, Huang Xiaoming, from Qingdao, he secretly determined to become an actor like Huang Xiaoming in the future.

Driven by this ambition, he successfully entered the Central Academy of Drama. In 2011, while studying at the school, he was selected by a producer to star in the suspense movie "Butterfly Curse," which marked his entry into the entertainment industry. Liu Xue Yi has had the opportunity to work with top actresses such as Jing Tian, Yang Zi, and Zhao Liying, but unfortunately, they haven't brought him much fame.

In the entertainment industry, actors generally become popular either because of their outstanding looks or because they have a distinctive appearance that makes them easily recognizable. Alternatively, they may possess exceptional acting skills that deeply resonate with the audience. In the drama "Unshakable Faith," the producer not only cast new talents like Ji Dan Yang but also included experienced actors like Ding Yong Dai, Kong Lin, and Xu Bai Hui to provide support.

In the drama, Ding Yong Dai, who plays a character who used to be a spy and now deliberately hides his identity as an undercover traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, portrays the role vividly, interestingly, and convincingly. Zhang Yan, played by Kong Lin in "Unshakable Faith," is a female police chief from the 1950s who has climbed her way up from a pile of dead bodies and is a true veteran of the revolution. Kong Lin's portrayal of the female police chief appears lackluster, lacking the military presence and spirit.

Furthermore, her facial expressions are stiff, and she fails to convey the decisive and resolute qualities of a police chief. Despite the passage of nearly 30 years since the broadcast of the TV series "The Unregretful Pursuit," her portrayal of Liu Yaqin still remains unforgettable. Kong Lin, along with Zhang Jiayi and Xing Minshan, was classmates with them and appeared in director Li Shaohong's film "Bloody Morning" while she was in university.

Later, she also appeared in Zhang Yimou's film "Raise the Red Lantern," playing the role of Yan'er, a naive young girl who dreams of becoming a concubine. Kong Lin's most memorable role is the pitiful and detestable "Invitation Moon Palace Master" in the drama "Little Fish and Flower Without Flaw." Having experienced two betrayals by boyfriends, Kong Lin, at 54 years old, is childless and unmarried. Despite not achieving great fame, she is still regarded as a talented actress in the hearts of the audience. Her performance in "Unshakable Faith" gives a sense of being at a loss.

In "Unshakable Faith," Xu Bai Hui portrays Director Ge with a cunning and possibly as a counterintelligence agent, or even the deepest hidden "snow wolf." Compared to the performances of the main cast in the drama, Xu Bai Hui's portrayal of Director Ge is full of theatricality and sophistication in every expression and smile.

Xu Bai Hui...

Xu Bai Hui is the only daughter in her family and the apple of her parents' eye. Her father is very open-minded and has focused on nurturing his daughter from a young age, hoping that she will have her own career and life without being bound by marriage. In their eyes, Xu Bai Hui believes that relationships should be selective rather than settling for just anyone, and they hope she will stay true to herself and not be swayed by others' opinions.

Compared to the uneven performances of the actors in the drama, there are numerous loopholes in the plot. Pang Hong Mei, as the personal protection expert and police officer, stands still like a wooden stake, watching Ji Dan Yang follow the enemy like a robot, only expressing herself as a genuine police officer with the words, "I will protect you with my life," to the person meeting them.

If you were Ji Dan Yang, would you believe her? In the stills of "Unshakable Faith," Pang Hong Mei (played by Peng Xiao Ran) wears a modern technological face and meticulously applied Korean makeup, resembling a robot.

In reality, Peng Xiao Ran is already beautiful enough and doesn't need such elaborate makeup. The makeup, costumes, and styling of the female lead in the stills of "Unshakable Faith" seem to be solely focused on pursuing beauty, disregarding the historical background, character occupations, and personalities, which is quite unreliable.

In the drama, several spies, although dressed plainly and with unconventional looks, have received unanimous praise from the audience, as they believe such character portrayals are more authentic. Some viewers believe that the potential of the storyline has been wasted, and the casting of the male and female leads was not well done, turning a promising drama into a flop. I earnestly plead with directors and the audience that we have reached the point where we can no longer tolerate the prevalence of "technological faces." In the entertainment industry, where there is no shortage of natural beauties, can't we find one to act in films?
