The Forensic Examiner Song Ci: A Disappointing Period Mystery Drama
In recent years, there have been many excellent works in the field of period mystery dramas. For example, in the past two years, "Imperial Detective" was a low-budget web series, but it became the dark horse of the year with its solid story and the director's strong filming skills. Another example is last year's "Strange Tales of the Tang Dynasty," which was not highly anticipated when it started filming, but received overwhelming praise after its release. With its brain-teasing plot, fast-paced rhythm, and solving a case within three episodes, it became the highest-rated period mystery drama of the year. As a result, the second season of the series was scheduled for production right after the first season ended, driven by audience demand.
This year, we also had "Beneath the Prosperous City," a drama full of plot twists. It kept viewers guessing the identity of the culprit until the final episode, and it received the highest ratings among period mystery dramas this year. And now, another period mystery drama is set to premiere, titled "The Forensic Examiner Song Ci."
In this drama, Song Ci deduced that the knife wound was left by the murderer after the death of Lord Yang. By analyzing the color of the corpse spots and the abdominal bloating, Song Ci determined that Lord Yang died of poisoning. This means that someone had poisoned Lord Yang's tea in advance, and after he died from the poison, they inflicted a knife wound on the body, staged the crime scene, and created the illusion of financial gain leading to murder.
Song Ci concluded that the person who successfully poisoned Lord Yang must be someone familiar with his habits, someone close to him. Soon, the culprit was identified as Qin Si, Lord Yang's butler. Later, Song Ci and Qin Si heard screams coming from Mr. Tian's room. When they rushed in, they found Mr. Tian's headless body. Startled, they quickly reported it to the authorities.
The bloodstained jade pendant belonged to a woman named Yu Fuyao, who had worn it when she was alive. Mr. Tian encountered Yu Fuyao in the village and was attracted to her beauty. He wanted to take her as a concubine, but Yu Fuyao would rather die than comply. Although Song Ci was initially unwilling to believe that Mr. Tian was really dead, she saw the same kind of wound on the body as the one on Mr. Tian's head. This made her believe that Mr. Tian had indeed died.
The process of solving the case once again reached a deadlock. Fortunately, Mr. Tian's head and body had been stitched together. Song Ci decided to start investigating the body with the help of her friend Li Zifang (played by Julia). It must be said that the two male leads really don't have the looks for a period drama! The makeup and costumes of the other supporting actresses also have a rough and cheap feel, which is very unattractive. It can only be said that the director's aesthetic sense is truly poor!
What's more, whether it's young actors or veteran actors like Dong Xuan, there is not a single scene with original dialogue in the entire drama. All the lines are dubbed, and the dubbing is not well synchronized, with many inconsistencies in lip movements. It seems that only Li Naiwen, who appears very late in the drama, uses the original voice.
Summary: This drama lacks attention to detail in many aspects. The dubbing is poorly synchronized, the production design appears cheap, and both male leads lack in looks and acting skills. Most of the supporting cast's acting is also subpar, significantly diminishing the overall viewing experience and quality of the drama. As a standalone crime-solving drama, the connection between the various cases is also inadequate, and the transitions between scenes are very abrupt and unsmooth. It is clear that the director not only lacks aesthetic sense but also lacks proficiency in the language of cinematography. Overall, this drama can be considered quite lousy, with only the plot of solving the cases being barely watchable. In almost every other aspect, it falls short, which is truly a pity considering the potential of the drama's script.
