The Forensic Examiner Song Ci: A Disappointing Blend of Mystery and Comedy
The web drama "The Forensic Examiner Song Ci," touted as a "suspenseful comedy," has been released on online video platforms. Although the main cast members of this series are not particularly well-known, the supporting cast is quite appealing. However, after the official release, it became evident that the greater the expectations, the greater the disappointment.
Typically, in such suspenseful dramas, a small case is presented at the beginning to introduce the protagonist and showcase their deductive abilities. However, the guards who sealed off the crime scene did not find anything amiss. Song Ci claimed to be a newcomer in charge and was immediately welcomed by them, allowing Song Ci to enter.
Apart from the deceased master Yang, the entire Yang residence had only one steward named Qin Si. Therefore, within less than five minutes, Song Ci identified Qin Si as the murderer and jovially resolved the murder case. The reason Song Ci owed them money was primarily due to his research and development of various tools for solving cases.
Many so-called light comedies often feel awkward because they employ actors lacking a sense of humor to portray "funny" storylines created by writers with no comedic flair. After a half-hearted squabble between Song Ci and Song Qing, the brother-sister duo, they finally embark on their second case.
A local tea shop owner borrowed a boat from Lord Li because he needed it to transport tea via the waterway. However, halfway through the journey, the tea shop owner was murdered on the boat. The two servants accompanying him claimed that a water ghost was responsible, and that night, they saw ghostly figures on the boat. This time, Song Ci was not alone; the male secondary character in the drama, Li Zi Fang, also made an appearance. Li Zi Fang was Lord Li's nephew.
Li Zi Fang not only had a rugged appearance but also had a straightforward and forceful approach to handling matters. He immediately concluded that the two servants were the killers, reasoning that since only they were on the boat, they had the greatest opportunity to commit the crime. Lord Li found this reasoning convincing and promptly had the two servants apprehended. Song Ci intervened and stopped Lord Li, stating that it couldn't have been the two servants and that the real culprit must be someone else.
Although Li Zi Fang's reasoning for accusing the two servants seemed far-fetched, Song Ci's refutation seemed even more tenuous than Li Zi Fang's argument. Since the two servants couldn't be the culprits, new clues were sure to emerge next, and indeed, Song Ci found a jade pendant among a pile of tea leaves.
Naturally, Song Ci couldn't believe in such supernatural occurrences, so he began deducing that the tea shop owner was possibly murdered by someone close to Yu Fuyao, either her brother or her fiancé. The subsequent plot was mundane, and the actors' performances left much to be desired.
Overall, despite being labeled as a suspenseful comedy, "The Forensic Examiner Song Ci" fails to deliver both in terms of suspense and comedy. It's difficult to find any praise-worthy aspects about it.
