The Forensic Examiner Song Ci: A Disappointing Attempt at Replicating Success

It's evident that "The Forensic Examiner Song Ci" is desperately trying to replicate the success of "Imperial Coroner," "Mysteries of the Tang Dynasty," and "Young Detective Dee." If the imitation were successful, "The Forensic Examiner Song Ci" could have been a high-quality period detective drama. However, after watching the first few episodes, it is almost certain that this drama is a poor imitation.

The initial episodes failed to captivate the audience and received widespread negative reviews. What did the viewers do wrong to deserve such a poorly crafted drama? Seeing no blood on the folding screen, one could deduce that the fatal injury was not located in the heart. A mere glance at the teacup revealed that someone had poisoned it. The servants around the deceased wore various suspicious expressions, as if fearing that the audience wouldn't recognize them as the culprits. Perhaps the male lead deduced the culprit based on their expressions?

Although the culprit didn't explicitly mention the poison used to kill the lord, the male lead accurately guessed it was pufferfish poison without even smelling the teacup. There are countless colorless and tasteless poisons in the world, so how did he precisely deduce it was pufferfish poison? The male lead's deduction skills seem more like supernatural assistance rather than merely being present at the crime scene and witnessing the culprit poison the teacup.

However, initially, the male lead's investigation was confusing and left people puzzled about its meaning. After all, it neither explained the significance of the beard nor featured any relevant plotlines. The male lead's investigation partner recognized the clues at a glance. Shouldn't he have been the prime suspect? After all, he had no significant connection with the young lady and yet remembered a jade pendant so clearly that he claimed it had nothing to do with him, but nobody believed him.

The forced and rational clues directly led to the revelation of the final culprit. Even before the main character completed the investigation, the audience had already figured it out. It's unclear whether we should thank this drama for turning everyone into a detective! The male lead doesn't have a specific identity but manages to participate in every case, solely motivated by money. Apart from the male lead, everyone else is portrayed as incompetent, which is quite amusing.

The level of unattractiveness in historical dramas has escalated, with unattractive male and female characters becoming a common sight in domestically produced period dramas. However, "The Forensic Examiner Song Ci" takes it to a whole new level with such a concentration of unattractive characters. The unappealing hairstyles are one thing, but the female lead's appearance is even worse. Just looking at her middle-aged face, she doesn't resemble a wealthy young lady but rather a nanny who secretly wears her mistress's clothes.

Although the male lead's appearance is somewhat tolerable, it would have been impossible, ten years ago, to cast an actor like him as the male lead. At best, his appearance suits a servant role, and even then, he would be the delicate type. Every time the camera focuses on the second male lead, it causes intense discomfort. His face looks like Zhu Yuanzhang swallowed a weight, already long enough and then expanded further.

Both male actors' acting skills are painfully lacking. The male lead exaggerates his performance, alternating between sharp and sarcastic, appearing highly astute, and acting like a fool, relying solely on widened eyes and pouting. The second male lead's face is completely immobile, attempting to portray a knowledgeable and refined character while reading a book in the beginning, but the protruding eyes made me burst into laughter.

Having witnessed numerous poorly made dramas, "The Forensic Examiner Song Ci" stands out as exceptionally terrible. It lacks a compelling storyline, skilled performances, and even has an eccentric aesthetic. It's truly a remarkable accomplishment! I wonder if the actors in the drama are as unappealing to you as they are to me.
