The Lonely Warrior: A Compact Plot Analysis and Critique of Character Development

The movie version of "The Lonely Warrior" has a tight plot. After Cheng Bing's release from prison, he single-mindedly pursues his escape. However, with 24 episodes in the TV series version of "The Lonely Warrior," it means that additional content must be added. While it is reasonable to focus on the chemistry and deep brotherhood between the characters in "The Lonely Warrior," the plot becomes dragged out and loses some substance after the 11th episode. Yesterday's episodes 17 and 18 were particularly confusing. Besides the overly dramatic storyline, there are details that do not withstand scrutiny. The abilities of Cheng Bing, the former captain of the criminal investigation team, and Pan Da Hai, the current captain of the criminal investigation detachment, are overestimated. Why do I say that?

These two events indeed have a significant impact on Cheng Bing, and it is understandable that he feels down and even resorts to raising money to help his former inmate. However, it is too sudden to claim that he has lost his faith and will no longer pursue Wang Da Yong. The audience is further confused when Cheng Bing suddenly realizes the wrongdoing of henchmen bullying the elderly at the orphanage and regains his motivation to pursue the escapees.

Tong Tong's sudden declaration of severing the father-daughter relationship is hard to understand, and Cheng Bing's two transformations are too abrupt. It must be said that yesterday's plot was somewhat melodramatic. So why do I claim that Cheng Bing and Pan Da Hai are both overestimated? Let's look at two details: Was it really necessary to go through so much trouble? Since Wang Da Yong and this woman named Xia communicated through text messages, wouldn't it be easier to track her down by identifying her phone number? Although there was no real-name registration for mobile phones during that era, it shouldn't have been difficult for the police to locate a person based on their phone number, right?

Cheng Bing was once the captain of the criminal investigation team, and Pan Da Hai is the captain of the criminal investigation detachment. Didn't they think of this? Although it is clear that the two cases are related, there are two suspicious points: First, Yang Hongan claimed that he was only preoccupied with escaping at the time, and the jadeite was still in the car; second, how did Wang Da Yong's fake ID suddenly appear in Gu Erqiang's car?

There are two possibilities: Either Yang Hongan carried Wang Da Yong's fake ID with him (Wang Da Yong's ID was stolen along with his bag), and when he surfaced, he didn't have time to retrieve the jadeite and the ID; or Wang Da Yong, after discovering that his belongings were stolen, couldn't accept losing the valuable jadeite worth millions. He speculated that the thief, after reading the text message, would contact Gu Erqiang, so Wang Da Yong returned to Jiecheng in 2008.

Yang Hongan claimed that although the agreed-upon transaction time was in April 2008, he arrived in Jiecheng a month early out of caution. Therefore, considering the timeline, Wang Da Yong could have easily surveilled and followed them during their meeting. He witnessed the entire process and, after Yang Hongan left, he secretly took the jadeite from the car, either not realizing his own fake ID or intentionally leaving it behind to create a false impression that he and Gu Erqiang were killed in a double-cross.

Considering the sudden tire explosion, the second possibility seems more likely! Logically, Cheng Bing and Pan Da Hai, both professionals in criminal investigations, should have deduced that Wang Da Yong returned to Jiecheng to retrieve the jadeite. But neither of them thought of this, which seems somewhat unconvincing. It can only be concluded that their abilities were overestimated!
