Plot Synopsis

In the late Qing dynasty and early Republican era, even though the emperor had abdicated, the Forbidden City was still a small court with its own officials and hierarchy. Rong Er, a commoner, accidentally becomes apalace maid and develops a close relationshipwith the guard Li Qi. Rong Er's intelligence and vivaciouspersonality also catch the attention of the last emperor,Puyi.

Rong Er's exceptional culinary skills are recognized by the senior maid Shou Xi, who takes her on as an apprentice. However, the eunuch Sun Liren falsely accuses Shou Xi of stealingpalace treasures, leading to her execution. Unwilling to accept her teacher's unjust death, Rong Er teams upwith Li Qi to investigate the case.

The real thief frames Rong Er again, butPuyi intervenes to save her. Rong Er and Li Qi then expose Sun Liren toPuyi, leading to hispunishment. As Shou Xi's innocence is finally established, the Feng Yuxiang army forcesPuyi to flee the Forbidden City.

The head eunuch Yu De Fu is revealed as the mastermind behind the theft ofpalace treasures,planning to sell them to foreign merchants. Rong Er and Li Qi work together to recover the national treasures and ensure Yu De Fu faces justice.

After leaving thepalace, Rong Er opens a restaurant, earning the title "The Last Cook" for her exceptional culinary skills honed within the Forbidden City.
