Plot Synopsis

This historical drama seriesportrays, with delicate strokes and heartfelt narration, the lives and struggles of three families - the Chen, Lin, andPan families - living in the hutongs of Beijing over the 40 years of China's reform and opening-upperiod.

The Chen, Lin, andPan families reside in the Beijing hutongs. Over the four decades of reform and opening-up, their lives have undergone tremendous changes.

The Chen family is an ordinary household. Their son, Chen Huan, was among the first batch of university students after the college entrance exam system was restored. He later became a renowned economist. Their daughter, Chen Qing, and son-in-law, He Da Hai, experienced the ups and downs of being self-employed and finding re-employment. The youngest daughter, Chen Xiao Ou, represents the new generation of women.

The Lin family is a high-ranking cadre household. Their son, Lin Yi Da, was transferred back from the countryside, bringing with him his rural wife, Qun Ying. He first worked in government agencies, then went into business. Their daughter, LinPingPing, went to university and later studied abroad.

In thePan family, the son, Liang Zi, is an unemployed youth. His mother,Pan Tao Hao,pins her hopes on him, but is disappointed by his lack of ambition.

Over the years, Chen Huan achieved career success but lost love. LinPingPing realized her dream of studying abroad but faced a difficult life. Chen Qing experienced job loss but eventually found herself again through re-employment. He Da Hai's business went through ups and downs but finally found his ownpath. Lin Yi Da lost his way in his business ventures, went through a divorce and remarried. Qun Ying transformed from a maid-like wife to apowerful woman.
